    Has anyone tried this?

I want to try and put together a touch screen system for my AC controls....

Sorry if its a noob question but im not quite sure if its possible without the use of a full on carputer...

    Anyone know if its possible?

i don't remember the username, but there is a member here with a newer(2000+) tiburon that did-- i remember seeing his custom button interface... try searching the build logs for a tiburon..

Short answer: Yes it is possible.

    Long answer:

It varies greatly depending on the type of AC controls you have. The most difficult style of system would be the type with linear push-rods or cable driven vents and controls. You can use either linear actuators or servos to make this work, however the exact implementation would be up to you as it depends greatly on your specific situation.

After getting servos or actuators installed, the process would be very similar regardless of if you had electronic controls, or the push-rod style system (as you just turned the push rods into electronic). You could go the easy route, and use something like an Arduino or you could build your own interface board. However you do it, the supporting electronics required again varies by application and if you provide more details as to your situation, I can as well.

Display and control is another issue, one which could potentially cost you a lot of money depending on which route you go. This is actually an option I was considering, as you could put three of them side by side to provide a very wide display and input (it's touchscreen) panel. This might however require more than one Arduino or other control chip, so it would greatly increase the complexity.

On the other hand, you could go with a simple serial control character LCD and some buttons which would interface very nicely and simply to the Arduino or other microcontroller and that would give you display and control.... but then that's no fun now is it?

And there you have basically a shortend version of the ideas I've gone through in my head when thinking about doing automated or electronic HVAC control in my car

I have an 05 scion tc. I don't like simple
when it comes to mods for the most part. I've already relocated the ac controls into the armrest and put gauges in the section where the hvac was. What I want to do now is do touch screen controls for the ac in the spot where I put the gauges. I'm just not too savy when it comes to the doing of this project. I read your response and frankly didn't understand all of it lol. Like. What's an arduino? And what's it's purpose? And I'm still bot 100% sure why I would need the actuators?

you dont need actuators i dont even know why that was mentiond... all ac's run off electricity so they run off relays i dont knwo wtf hes talking about.. what you want comes down to 2 things complexity and cash. and your going to put your time in to both. you can either spend alot of time learning somehing new or you can pay some one else to do it for you. go to sparkfun.com and go to ther forums in the project section. your gona need 2 things if your gona do this your self. time a dedication. the bords ur gona need a are a pic, relay bord (maby a 8 relay) maby a psp touchscreen with interface modula and learn some 8 bit coding :P

well, i understand that actuators would be needed if the vents or controls are cable driven.

Ah, see you left out what kind of car you had. Chances are with such a new car you do not have cable driven vents, so you should be able to get by with an Arduino (Go google it).

If you want to go without a carputer, you are going to need some kind of logic control, which is where microcontrollers come in. (See: Arduino)

And it's very apparent that you have ZERO CLUE as to what you are talking about. All A/Cs run off electricity? That's odd... my heat/cold select and my register select in my '04 Sunfire uses cables. Wonder if that cable is electric...

It could also be vacuum controlled as well, a lot of vent/register selects still are, even in newer cars and especially in "foreign" cars in my experience. It really just comes down to manufacturer and cost-savings involved.

Which brings us back to here:

Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?
