    off the shelf 15" lcd

I'm planning on ripping out my passenger side air bag/glove box and putting in a regular off the shelf 15" computer LCD mounted on a swing arm(probably a samsung 150 series).

Most of the ones I've looked at talk about a native resolution of 1024x768 but since im going to be hooking this up to an xbox with a vga adapter that only supports 640x480 i was worried that the lcd wouldn't look very good at the lower resolution. Can anyone confirm this? Any truth to the whole "native resolution" thing? I know it looks incredible on my CRT

Depends on your definition of looks very good. It will probably look fine.

But, the native resolution thing is not a myth. A 640x480 image on a 1024x768 lcd screen will be scaled.

Assuming it can be scaled no? I remember on old laptops if you wanted to run anything but native you were out of luck . ... if the laptop was 1024x768 and you gave it 800x600 then you only used the middle 800x600 pixles and were left with a huge border.

May want to make sure either the box or the screen can do it. Maybe pick one up from a store with a 0 questions return policy and test it quick.

But assuming I want to use those 15" tft with a carputer, then it would work perfectly fine in car as it would on a desk top right?

usually the big problem with off the self lcd's if the nit rating. They are usually in the 150 range. Thats ok.. but you'll be un-happy in direct sunlight.

I'm looking for a suitable 15inch screen for my boot install too.

I have been looking on www.ebuyer.co.uk and so far even the cheapest ones have a rating higher than the 200cd/m2 brightness with a 250:1 contrast or higher that I thought were the magical numbers for sunlight readability?

Do I just get one of the Sharp/Hansol/Philips screens in the £200-300 range or should I shell out for the Sony screens that have 260cd/m2 and a contrast ratio of 400:1 ?
