Thumbs up Synaptics announces new range of multitouch capcitives...

Looks like 2010 is going to be a good year for touchscreens. Synaptics just announced a range of ClearPad 7200 capacitive touchscreens available to OEMs later this year: SlashGear

Looks pretty promising, and was almost guranteed to happen as soon as I bought myself a single-touch capacitive upgrade [sigh].

    Here's the official press release.

while multi-touch is great, is there a safe way to implement it in-car?

at this point, no fe's support it(or does OM?), and how could it be setup so that it doesn't take the drivers full attention to use? at this moment, thinking of the common multi-touch gestures, none of them are driver friendly...(right now all i can think of is zoom, and image rotate)

Think stuff like, for example, 1 finger swipe to advance songs. 2 finger swipe to change albums. 3 finger swipe to change genres. Or whatever you want to program in. Add in one set of gestures horizontally, one set vertically like two fingers up/down to adjust volume.

Also, simple taps like 1 finger tap for play/pause, 2 finger tap for jump forward 30 seconds, etc.

I could see menu navigation using 3 fingers to move from screen to screen, with the multi-touch gestures working either the same on every screen (play/pause or mute) OR some changing based on the screen you are on (e.g. HD radio 2 finger swipe might change station, 2 finger tap might change preset).

I use gestures similar to these on my iPad in the car and it doesn't require even taking your eyes off the road. Very convenient.

^^^ Exactly. Gestures with 2 and 3 fingers are the main reason for that.

BTW, why zoom is not driver friendly? When I launch traffic on the iPad while driving, I can easily zoom in and out that way better than looking for a specific "+" or "-" button.

Zoom and rotate aren't driver friendly compared to other gestures because if you hit a bump while trying to zoom or rotate then you end up with a pan gesture instead. Gestures (even zoom and rotate) are still better then having to hit specific buttons though.

I agree with that, but this never happened to me though, but I can see how it could.
