The capacitive multi touch panels found in phones and those cheap android tablets use the I2C protocol, not USB. I2C is not easily adapted to a PC.
But I don't understand why companies like Lilliput and Xenarc aren't making a capacitive multi-touch monitor. It is a niche market and small demand, but it is their niche market.

I certainly hope so, at this stage, I'm leaning towards a tablet instead of investing in a carputer. There are so many android tablets to chose from, and if android is not your thing, there are many Win7 tablets coming out too.

Problem being sandy bridge i5 tablets are 10", which is too big for a dash, and the 7"-8" tablets appear to all be atom which while it's fast enough for daily laptop duties, isn't really fast enough for quick media capabilities.

I just want a damn screen from an 8" tablet to build my own installation lol

Android isn't mature enough to play media nicely, I don't want to be jumping in and out of apps.

Any why cant at least one tablet manufacturer or display manufacturer release products in Double Din format. The dimensions are so close but not exactly double Din for reasons which I cant fathom. It should put an end to flimsy bezels and ugly adaptations.

I found a USB 7" widescreen mutli-touch capacitive overlay for $158 from mouser and ordered it to see if it all works, well good news it does . It is made by Panjit and it is a eval kit with USB and I2C interface. I received it about 10 min ago and plugged it all in and Windows 7 automatically installed the drivers for 2 finger touch. Pinch to zoom in the browser works as expected and at this point that is all I have tried but the good news is it works great. There is a 85$ USB only model but it has a long lead time and a minimum order amount, maybe something MP3Car may want to look into. Anyway below is the link for the Eval and also other good news is they make other sizes including a 10.1".

    10.1"

    7"

Thanks davedave, I've been looking off and on for info on 7" capacitive touchscreens, and this seems to be the best solution with the overlay. I don't understand why they don't make any 7" capacitive touchscreens anywhere! they're so much better than resistive based on my experiences with cell phones!

I never posted any questions about it cuz I hate people like Tidder who just go on to flame people that are asking a simple question.
I'm pretty sure it's just easier to skip over the thread than to post a condescending reply!
