    Finaly a 7" and 10.1" Multi-Touch capacitive touch overlay

I found a USB 7" widescreen mutli-touch capacitive overlay for $158 from mouser and ordered it to see if it all works, well good news it does . It is made by Panjit and it is a eval kit with USB and I2C interface. I received it about 10 min ago and plugged it all in and Windows 7 automatically installed the drivers for 2 finger touch. Pinch to zoom in the browser works as expected and at this point that is all I have tried but the good news is it works great. There is a 85$ USB only model but it has a long lead time and a minimum order amount, maybe something MP3Car may want to look into. Anyway below is the link for the Eval and also other good news is they make other sizes including a 10.1". The documentation says they also have a 8.9" model as well'

    10.1"

Working great so far although it’s hard to tell how accurate it is at this point because I don’t have a screen under it yet, it’s just lying on the desk. But it seems ok so far.

Kind of expensive, but then again, it's multitouch.

There is a cheaper USB only one for like $90 but it has a long lead time and a high minimum order. maybe Mouser will get some in stock at some point or maybe Mp3Car will get some :-P.

Explain how multitouch is an asset in your vehicle.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

    Troll?

I hate to feed trolls, but:

    1. Why people assume the driver is the only person in the vehicle at all times?

    2. Multitouch enables pinch to zoom and panning to scroll everywhere there is a map, web page or scroll bar. No need to hunt for small buttons/arrow to move around maps or traffic info. I argue it's more intuitive than using your typical windshield wipers controller.

    3. Two and three finger gestures are only possible with multitouch interface;

    4. Its more typical for a car to have stops along the journey, like 3min traffic lights -where you can operate more "complicated" controls - than a scenario where the driver is always stiff, busy navigati gating through busy downtown traffic (an odd one with no stops! Lol)

multi touch could be used for navigations purposes as well. two finger swipe could swipe via artist, one finger could swipe per song. you could map a 'pinch' to pause the media that is playing. Two finger 'spin' motion could control volume. seems like it would be a great asset to our hobby.

I think it's a legitimate question, even if you don't.

Using multi-touch requires more manual dexterity for input. That means more focus has to be applied to the action when inputting a request. That is focus that is taken away from driving.

    1. Why people assume the driver is the only person in the vehicle at all times?
    Valid point.
Although I believe that the majority of us install a PC to give the driver access to the functionality of the PC (navigation, media playback, and so forth).

    2. Multitouch enables pinch to zoom and panning to scroll everywhere there is a map, web page or scroll bar. No need to hunt for small buttons/arrow to move around maps or traffic info. I argue it's more intuitive than using your typical windshield wipers controller.
With the right interface, all that can be accomplished with single-digit gesturing (no bird-flipping jokes intended ).

    3. Two and three finger gestures are only possible with multitouch interface;
I don't see the added benefit over single-finger gestures.
Driver safety is not, in my opinion, improved when you have to use two or three fingers in a specific motion on the screen to accomplish a task.
(This is starting to sound obscene!)

    4. Its more typical for a car to have stops along the journey, like 3min traffic lights -where you can operate more "complicated" controls - than a scenario where the driver is always stiff, busy navigati gating through busy downtown traffic (an odd one with no stops! Lol)
    I think I see where you're going...
Use the more complex gestures that require multi-touch for more complex tasks that you would only undertake while stopped anyway.
That does make sense, but those more complex tasks aren't ones that I would want to trust to a gesture, regardless of how many fingers you put into it.
(OK, I purposely made that sound dirty!)

    I guess I disagree.
The added complexity of multi-touch gestures introduces new potential issues that I wouldn't want to deal with.

    Example:
You have a "pinch" motion to pause playback, as in your example.
What if the touch controller misreads your pinch as a gesture that does something else, like close your frontend or call your girlfriend or activate a mechanical device (linear actuator or somesuch).
Then you have this panicky situation that you have to deal with while you're stopped at a traffic light (in RipplingHurst's example) and a limited amount of time to deal with it before the people behind you start getting pi$$ed because the light is green and you're not going.

Yeah, it's a very off-the-wall scenario, but you can't say it's not realistic. And I'm sure it's one that none of us would want to deal with.

Don't get me wrong. I think multi-touch is cool. I like the way it works on my Droid phone, as well as on the tablets I've seen. I just don't see it being an effective means of input for a PC, especially one that is primarily for the driver.
A PC designed to be utilized by passengers makes more sense, sure. But that's not how the PC in my truck is used, so I don't tend to think that way.
