Custom LCD wiring loom - shielding/interference questions

    Hello guys

As I do not have the original VGA and USB cables that came with my Logitel 8" touchscreen (a 'friend' kindly lost them), I am planning to make a custom loom using hopefully CAT5/network cable for signal only.

After counting the data lines that are actually used by the screen, I have worked out that I can, in theory, run a single piece of cat5 cable from the screen which will be mounted in the front sun visor, to the trunk where my laptop will be kept. This will be both VGA and USB signals. Most likely all power to the screen (the main 12v input, and 5v for the touch controller) will be cabled in separately from the main data lines, there's a possibility that the 5v may be taken from the laptop usb connection but I'm not entirely sure yet as I have a stable 5v power supply that I will be using for almost all my USB devices.

My question is, if I run both VGA signals and USB signals (without 5v power from USB) down the same piece of cat5 cable, is this likely to cause any interference at all? Depending on the cable I eventually use, it is likely to have shielding around the whole bunch of cores, but not individual wires.

If the 5v supply is used in the same cable (for the touch controller), how much difference is it likely to make with regards to interference?

Also, if I were to use unshielded cable, is it likely to pick up so much noise that picture quality would be significantly affected?

Hopefully this all makes sense, any advice on the issue would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    Rob

    Do not use cat5.

Use shielded video cable. USB through is ok, with or without 5v +.

Don't use solid core wire, make sure it is stranded.

Here is a decent low cost cable:

Thanks for the speedy reply, that looks perfect for the job, and with more cores maybe more useful.

Are you aware of any sites that sell it in the UK though? A quick google reveals either 'flat' unshielded cable or pre-made VGA leads, my search wasn't extensive but I couldn't easily see a place that sells it per meter.

EDIT: Just found this, is that roughly the same? Seems very expensive compared to your link though http://www.maplin.co.uk/multi-core-s...rdercode=XR28F

    Cheers

    Ya, that's a bit steep.

Sorry, I don't know of any place within the UK you can buy similar wire, but you could contact Show Me.
They might ship to you. Should cost less even with the shipping.

After several emails I have had no response from Show Me but a friend of mine is travelling in the US at the moment so will drop him a message and see if he can get the cable and ship it to me.

All I can find in the UK that is similar is only sold on huge rolls (50 or 100 meters) and from all the sites I've looked at I think Show Me is the lowest priced of them all.

    Cheers
