Question what do i look for when purchasing a decent lcd, that i can use on carputer?

I really need to find an lcd its the last thing I need for my carputer, I was planning on getting a cheap $150 flip down 7.2" lcd off eBay.........but I guess I wont be able to see crap. What is a good, cheap, easy to install LCD that is good for a carputer? preferably flip-down roof mounted. Thanks

If your not all to interested in text then most composit screens will do you just fine. Im pretty sure you sould be able to find something at eather digitalww.com or dscustoms.com

I bought an el cheapo (read 90$) composit as a temp for testing and such. Im still trying to decide weather i want to fabricate an enclosure or just go indash.

will it be tough to navigate around through windows if I use a composite screen? I plan on having winamp, powerdvd, misc.
    What is my cheapest choice

-I want to be able to navigate windows and still see what im doing

-I would like to use my composite video out on my epia motherboard

    -view dvds clearly

preferably a flip down, or something similar so I dont have to tear my Jeeps dash a part and do some cutting

what would you do in my case? Thanks

did a little research.....please tell me if i am wrong..

i can multiply the rsolution and get the dots.......right?

    640x480=307,200 dots

So I want at least 307,200 dots to read text right?

The lcd i wanted ($140) has a resolution of: 960x234
so this lcd has 224,640 dots, which wont be very good in a 640x480 resolution.........right?

I found an lcd that has a resolution of 234(H) RGB 480(W) = 336960 pixels

So this LCD should display text fine in a 640x480 resolution in the car right...........?

Please let me know if im right. Thanks alot

    Ok, wait a sec

    640pixels x 480pixels = 307,200 PIXELS not dots
    dots would be 640xRGBx480 = 921600 DOTS

Your $140 lcd has an actual resolution of

    320px234p = 74880 Pixels or 320xRGBx234 = 224640 Dots

I assume these are composite screens.
You are not going to be able to read text very well with them anyway, unless you up the font size, etc.

Definately not very well with the 320x234 $140 screen

ok hmm.....so, how many dots do i want to be able to read text? I just want to browse the somposite screens and find the one that is closest to how many I need. Or do u have another suggestion? My budget is $200 and i prefer not to saw through my dash for a custom mounting. thanks man

    you're not understanding here.

To stay anywhere close to your budget, you have to go composite.

    Composite & text = bad

That's not to say you can't read it, but it damn sure won't be clear.

Your best bet is to up your budget a *tad* and get a tm-701 ~$220-$250

It is a composite screen, but i've seen pictures of acceptably readable text.
Plus it fits in a din slot, no cutting !

don't get the wrong impression. If you know what your looking for the composit screen is fine. Im using mine for winamp odb2 and gps maping. The only things that are a lil hard are navigating the playlists, as in looking for a particular song, and reading route numbers and street names off the map. Both of those things are fairly infrequent events. For my day to day use all is well and i don't really even care.

For readable text you really need to go to VGA however how often do you really have to read text. Words are recognizable with composite.

Hope that clears it up a bit... prolly not

As far as composite screens go, the tm-701 is the most saught after. It is a manual open, and everyone who has one raves about how good the quality is for just a composite screen.

There are some examples here and here

I dont know if you knew this, but the actual LCD is the same as in the xenarc's, its the same Panasonic screen. Just uses a different controller. So while the quality isnt near VGA, its much better than traditional composite.

You could even buy a touchscreen seperatly when you get the money and install that.
