Specific screen choice-buy stock or modify?

Although this does involve other choices as well, it seemed to best fit here. And yes, I've searched. Though because I am still new to this, I may not know the correct terminology for somethings.

I'd like to stick to a single DIN screen and have it retract, but the selection is definitely lacking. The few that I've found have just plain bad reputations, though I'm sure are fixable which means that it's still an option.

The other option would be to add a touchscreen to an existing DVD player unit that includes a retractable screen. The two issues from this that I can see is that the touchscreen can cause the image to blur ever so slightly, and I can't seem to find a unit that has more than composite inputs. That can work, but I'd rather shoot for at least s-video.

    ...option two and a half
Similar to number two, but involves a half-din monitor and a half-din dvd player with the same touchscreen mod.

And as a note, the touchscreen outputs to USB leads that need soldered to for this to work. Though it does provide a couple extra leads that could be used to convert the USB port on this player to pass-through to the computer.

So my general questions basically boil down to, what are everyone's opinions on these ideas? I'm sure they've all been tried before, but I can't seem to find anything relevant/recent.

EDIT: I suppose something like this Xenarc mod or similar lilliput mods.

yeah, i have not seen a good or even 'acceptable' review of flip out screens in years.

so i'll state the positive side only. lilliput updated their design to use metal gears instead of the old design that used plastic gears that became known to strip out. that is the only screen that i am aware of any updates since the multitude of problems that all the bad reviews came from years ago..

Thanks for the info. I'm not really thrilled with this being my only option, but theft deterant is my first priority and in an 03 saturn, (although I think it was a package), it's be pretty obvious for anyone looking that a screen would be aftermarket. Plus, I'd like to keep a radio separate for those short drives to and from work not to mention an easy place to put a usb dvd drive (part of the the 2nd din).

The GL703-NP/C/T was the newest model that I could find. Any idea if this one might have metal gears?

Also, we're looking to buy a house so this will be in the planning stages for a little while. Hopefully enough time for the AMD E-450 nano ITX boards to come out. If not the Asus E45M1-I deluxe will do just fine.

    Thanks again

sorry, i'm really not sure-- they used to list 'updated metal gears!!' in the product description, though that is about as much as i know..

another option-- what about using a normal screen, and mounting it on top of the dash, or if you have a cubby below the radio, place it there-- then when you want to remove it, you unplug the harness, and hide it out of sight..
