Seeking Decent Single Din Flip Up Touchscreen. Pics inside.

Title says it. Due to the limited amount of room I have I'm faced with the choice to find a decent single din flip up touchscreen or hack my leather dash to pieces to try to adapt a double din monitor. I'm not sure if the latter would even work and it could possibly serve as a obstruction to my view of the road so I am not keen on taking this route. Please help me find a decent flip up.

Through my research I've come to realize that flip up touchscreens are notorious for reliability and performance problems. Most of the reviews I've read on this site and others are quite old, I don't know how far flip ups have come since then.

I will post what I've been able to find so far, a list of the flip ups I have heard of with pics, specs and comments made other members/customer reviews. Please feel free to contribute your knowledge, stories/experiences and suggestions to other flip ups not already mentioned. Thanks. BTW as you may have already noticed by my post count, I'm new so I apologize in advance for my screw ups.

SP-716, DWW-700M, MTS12000 and TST-70NP/C (Yes these are all different names for this monitor)

Motorized 7 inch touchscreen, 800x600, 800x480 native. Has VGA and composite input. I don't have any other technical specs.

Is motorized. Motors are weak and struggle when on a hill or when the car is accelerating. Can get to the point where the motors just give up. In one case site member said his unit failed on the 5th use. LEDs are bright so they are easy to see but perhaps too bright. One site member said he needed to cover up the LEDs with electrical tape in order to see at night. TV tuner does not perform well. Many members have had trouble getting video or the touchscreen to work with their computers. Touchscreen drivers have been described by other members as a "nightmare." Screen is easy to read in sunlight. Screen is too bright at night even when settings are dimmed. Screen needs to rest on something behind it in order to be stable, otherwise it tends to flop around. Onscreen video failure is not uncommon. Remote has a cheap appearance. Unit is big and requires quite a bit of room behind it in the dash.

I don't even know if these are still available or where I would get one of these units. Last I heard the price ranged from $250-$400

Touchcreen has to be recalibrated often. Difficult to see in sunlight. I don't have much more info then that from peoples experiences.

This screen is no longer available on mp3car.com, I don't know why. I don't know where else one of these could be found. mp3car.com store had these priced at $450. Used ones can be found for $130.

Many of the old reviews say the motors and gears are very prone to failure. However I've also heard that Lilliput recently updated this model and now uses metal gears. Can anyone confirm this? Has anyone had any experience with the more recent run of these monitors?

This monitor is tilt adjustable but not side to side angle adjustable. One site member said it is nicely visible in the daylight. Touchscreen works nicely. Wiring is a pain in the but because there are so many wire coming from the back of the unit. Has a VGA and a DVI input. Has a DVD drive that can play DVDs on screen and/or function as a DVD drive for a carputer. Firmware issues are prominent. There supposedly are two generations of this monitor. I don't know what the difference between each is or when the new generation was released.

This unit is no longer available on Xenarc direct. I don't know where I could find one. It was priced around $700 new.

I suppose that the fact that these are still available from Xenarc is a good sign. There are two generations of these. I don't know what the difference is between them internally. I have seen two different styles of this monitor as shown below. I believe that these differences in appearance are due to the difference in generation. Would anyone be able to confirm this? Does anyone know which one is the newer one? Does anyone know what the differences are between both?

This is not a motorized monitor, it is a spring loaded manual flip up. Less coolness factor but more reliability due to the fact that there are no motors or gears present to wear out. Video performance is good, wiring is easy to work with, touchscreen is accurate. Other members have mentioned there is a high brightness model available but the Xenarc site makes no mention of this. Some say the visibility is poor in sunlight. Multiple people have described the spring loaded opening action as quick and violent and that it could strike a person or object in the way. One member said the ribbon cable was problematic. Driver issues are prominent. Does not have vertical tilt capability. Monitor may rattle with road bumps.

These can be found for $150 new.

I don't know if the SP-716, MTSVO-SC or Lilliput GL701 are up-down tilt adjustable. Does anyone know?

Most of the member/customer reviews I've summarized were from years ago, some from as far back as 2004. Some of it may be out of date. If you notice this please post.

My guess is that most of these screens are discontinued. My guess is that most Car PC hobbyists just rather mod and install a double din setup. Originally I had one of these screens, the K90, but it didnt like OEM, it actually looked odd. Once I modded my dash with double din, it looked so much better then a motorized screen.

For a new project I am once again looking into flip up screens. I specifically want one that is not motorized because I do not want to worry about the motor. The only one I see that is still being sold is the Xenarc 700m I think it is?

Where are you finding the screen for 150? Because I need two of them for my project!

The ones I saw for $150 were being sold on ebay. Both are gone now but others can be found for fairly cheap.

I've never heard of the k90. I understand you didn't like the look but how did it perform? Got pics?

Well, because it was so hard to find them, I decided to change my install. The passenger will get a double din style screen. They do not really need to see the road, well not like I do. My side though can not have a double din because I cant see the road. So I want to use the motorized screen to fold in when I drive. Then when I park, the screen comes out.

The K90 is the previous screen that came before the K301. It suffured from the same issues, but mine only did it when the A/C was on. The screen sat inbetween the A/C vents. Had no other issues.

My link is using the wrapper. Just ignore the stupid Ebay link that skimwords is putting in the post. Mine is all the way at the bottom of the post. This skimword $h!+ is annoying.

It seems like its a feature MP3car added! I notice they are slowly adding advertisement to the forums, just not as much as when your not a member.

By the way, the one I linked to is non-motorized. So I think the way it works is that you push and the screen pops out via being spring loaded.
