Well, ok, I am not completely inept in electronics. I know how to solder properly, I can more or less read circuit diagrams, I know the difference between a resistor and capacitor and can use a multimeter. But thats about it.

I still dont get it why there isnt a proper one out there. Everyone wants one, but there is none...

yes there is, posted in the first post. tablets blow away our traditional carpc's in almost every way. cost, ease of use, power consumption, physical footprint, touch capability and display readability are all dominant in high end tablets now.

the only thing tablets dont have is windows. but windows 8 is coming this fall, and the entire gui is geared for tablet use. by this time next year i would bet that you will be able to buy a $600 win8 tablet that just destroys what we all currently have in our cars. i would bet most of us will end up selling our car computer gear and actually saving money by upgrading to a tablet.

A tablet, even a 7", will never fit into my car. Not only because its far too clunky, but also because its ugly.
Also I highly doubt there will be a tablet that can handle the stuff I need in the next 5 years. A tablet is more or less a closed restricted system, a PC isn't. I'm not even going to talk about the performance side. And for stability issues alone, I will never put a 10-14 port USB hub (or several others) on the only USB port available on a tablet, if it even has one, and if that one is actually a proper one (most can't use HDDs and other media devices on them).

Yeah, I see the tablet still catering to a small group of people for the near future. Win8 will bridge the gap a bit but keep in mind that the ARM edition will run only apps purchased from their store. That means no RR or centrafuse.

I'm waiting for my raspberry pi! Next I have to learn to program in java

I agree completely.

Tablets may appeal to a small group who either A, doesn't want to bother with the whole car PC thing and just wants to slap an tablet in a cradle and be done with it.
Or B, is still tethered to the fruit tree and won't let go.

Tablets are far to limited to be useful in a vehicular application.
This whole car PC thing took off in the first place by people who want to tailor their systems to meet the individual needs of the user. Not sheeple that just want a fancy way to merge their ipad into their car.

(Sorry if I offend ipad owners, my comment is meant for the apple slappies)

Another thing is that if your requirements on a system are that low that a tablet will be enough, new double DIN radio systems will be enough too.

I only had problems with the first models (Kenwood DDX 70xx for example). The ones after that had an autodimmer and were bright enough in my convertible in sunlight and dark enough at night. The last one I had (Alpine W200Ri) was very good in brightness, and thats like 7 years ago.

Ya, I don't really understand the appeal to a tablet in a vehicle. I don't want to use a tablet interface in my car, I want something oriented towards being used in a vehicle. Something simple like having persistent player controls and volume controls whether you are in the music player, or in the main menu is a big deal. I don't want to be switching apps every time I need to change the volume, or see what song is playing.

Plus as was said, if a Tablet would do what I need it to do, a double din off the shelf unit would work as well. The big thing with the CarPC is the processing that I want to do with it as well. Once I get AudioMulch working on it, I'll be able to control all my crossovers and time alignment and eq's, which you can't do with the headphone out of a tablet.
