    flip up dash top display

Hi, I'm after a touchscreen that is able to mount on top of dash that flips up when in use and can be.folded closed when not in use. Is anyone aware of such a product?

There are so many reasons why this is a bad idea. The top of the list is it's illegal in most states to block the view out of the front windshield. For you, the worst issue is having to replace it every year or so because the screen or electronics inside are melted from the direct sunlight. The list goes on, but I hope you get my drift.

If you are asking about a display that mounts in a single DIN slot (same size as standard head unit), they are available, but I still cannot recommend them.

The biggest problem is that the gears that operate the in/out and screen tilt function are going to made out of plastic and eventually give out. More likely sooner than later. Mine lasted a few months. It was a cheap model from eBay, which is about all I know of. I made mine workable by violently pulling the screen in and out after it refused to work. I put a small piece of velcro on the back of the screen and dash to hold it in place and it is still working today. You are better off getting a Metra surround kit and some fiberglass and figuring out how to do a custom mount. Will look better and be way more functional.

Here is a higher quality and more expensive example with a name brand screen

If you insist this is the way to go, but don't have enough cash, take a look at the website below for a cheap one (found with Google search for "VGA 7" DIN")

    Cheers and good luck

^ to add to that-- there are 2 main brands that i turn to for in-car computing screens.

lilliput-- their 1-din screen had the plastic gear issues thefdog described, but a while back i saw that they had updated the design to use metal gears, but since then have not seen any units for sale, or any reviews of the updated design. in theory, the revision should make this a perfect screen for space-limited installs, but i don't really need one, so i haven't got a real reason to hunt them down..

xenarc-- they had very serious issues with the flexible ribbon cable between the screen and the chassis breaking apart over time--nearly every unit did it. i think these units were eventually discontinued.
