Are you looking for better display quality or more screen area to work with? I understand that spec for spec the technology is out of date, but while in a vehicle how much more do you need to display? Compare the Lilliputs/Xenarcs with OEM screens and they actually look pretty favorable.

All that being said, I'll have the chance to check out the stuff planned for next year at CES in 2 weeks. Lilliput and Xenarc always have reps there with their latest touchscreen line.

Looking for more resolution mainly. I had a 1280x800 tablet mounted in my car for sometime and it looked infinitely better than the Lilliput I'm using now. Very handy for reading small text without having to zoom in

So I did a bit more digging and found this 7" IPS 1280x800 display that is supposedly used in the Nexus 7. The model number is N070ICG produced by Chimei.

A bit more of digging and I found that Revosys sells this panel (albeit VERY pricey) with additional options such as "projected capacitive" (16 point multitouch), 5 wire resistive, and surface capacitive. They also offer antiglare coatings and whatnot.

Nice, but I don't think this display is worth $400 with a few options.

MAYBE THERE IS HOPE! Going to try to find a USB controller to use with that ebay version

What resolution is it capable of? Full HD? What kind of touch is it?

That's insane resolution. TBH I don't think anything above 1280x800 will make a difference at the viewing distance most CarPCs are used at

This lack of higher resolution displays is further compounded by the fact that the *minimum* supported resolution for Windows 8 metro applications is 1024x768, meaning that none of them will even attempt to launch using these ancient displays at their native 800x480 resolution.

It does strike me as quite strange that five years after building my first car PC, the display technology from the major players hasn't really changed. We're still seeing the same 7" panels running at 800x480, many of which are *still* using resistive touch panels as the standard option. It's like we're stuck in 1994.

Clearly there are some exceptions (as noted in previous replies), but the current state of things seems rather absurd, especially in the face of all these tablet panels that are light years ahead in their technology. I always figured the same manufacturers were producing these panels, yet the form factor popular among the car PC crowd seem to not be keeping pace.... I just don't get it.
