I've just installed a 10" Lillput touchscreen into my dash and I'm wondering how everyone else deals with the brightness of the LCD at night. My car is heavily tinted for privacy but the LCD just illuminates the inside of my car like there's no tomorrow. I can adjust the brightness with the remote but this is inconvenient to do all the time. So does anyone have any automated solutions for this?
except laptop screens, not many monitors support, adaptive brightness through PC... Especially if they connect with VGA only... one think you could do, is have a script run all the time, and when its dark (beyond some time), it changes all your pc themes, to others, more dark
I run RR and that has a built in night mode with adjustable levels. Works great!

Those ways will work but if you don't control the backlight it's still pumping out 100% and the screen will still have a glow about it at night.
If you can, I'd look to control the backlight directly. Either with something tied to your dash lights or a light sensor (which is what I did).

Driveline has built-in dimming support based on time of day/night. Works very well with my high brightness (450nit) monitor. I think it dim's by about 40-60% SNO
planning on adding a pwm dimmer to my screen at the same point i change all my interior lighting for custom led boards-- it will all be driven off the same 15khz pwm...
Thanks for the feedback, I was hoping to control the backlight like davekra's solution but it's a little to complicated for me. I ended up having my software use a dark color scheme between 6pm and 6am - works well enough. ^^
Sounds like it would be nice if someone was to write a program that tracked the sunrise and sunset and adjusted the screens brightness automatically for this. Also if someone actually provided a brightness detector it could be used to adjust the screen as some android devices can do now.
