I received my 7" multi-touch capacitive IPS screen from Chalk this morning. Including the HDMI cable, audio breakout cable and power supply, it was $164 delivered in 6 days! Outstanding! This is the black frame model, so it is essentially just the screen and controller attached on the back. Build quality is excellent, and I was able to update the firmware following the instructions on the site without a problem.

First impressions: I'm a happy camper. Works flawlessly with Windows 8, no drivers necessary...everything just works. Image quality is VERY good. It would definitely be better if the screen was a little brighter, but it's certainly as good as the good Lilliputs. About 400nits.

Mounting: There is none. It's effectively an "open frame" device, but with a slight difference. The front panel is really identical to a typical tablet, so you have the swipe areas around the outside. The way this thing is assembled makes creating your own mount, or even using a standard tablet mount very easy. It is about 1/8th inch bigger in every dimension than a typical 2DIN opening, so you're not going to get it flush mounted without some work. But it is SUPER thin...not more than 1/2 inch front to back at its deepest point, and less the 1/8 inch at the edges.

Not great pics, but you can get an idea of the dimensions.

Note the audio out requires a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter. It outputs the audio delivered via HDMI. (are you paying attention NUC owners that don't have an analog audio output)? This monitor solves that problem.

All in all...Highly recommended if you're prepared to get creative with the mounting issue.

Well yes and no. It is a carPC project, and it is pretty likely it will wind up in my truck at different stages in its development, but it is not for me per se. More of an R&D project at this point.

Hows the visibility on that display? I mean the resolution to size ratio. Can you still read normal text well? Are buttons in the normal Windows interface big enough? I only know 1024x768 on my 7" (800x480 native), which looks horrible.

Also how are you going to supply it with power in your car? I read its 5V input, so I guess it needs a separate stabilized PSU?

The only reason you would want to buy a screen like this is for use with Windows 8 or Android, both of which have interfaces designed for touch. 1280x800 at 7" is probably just not practical for non-touch interfaces. I'll admit the text gets a little small for my tired old eyes, but once Centrafuse comes up, not really an issue.

There's a 5v accessory line available on the DC-DC box that could be used, and I actually have a couple of 12v to 5v regulated converters lying around here someplace. I'm trying to decide how I want to mount it right now. Also looking at options for the HDMI cable, as the one I'm testing with is WAY too big in diameter.

    Anyone experience the same issue:
I have the 8" resistive touchscreen from chinatobby, ebay item: 170933731245
Just recently out of nowhere, the screen stopped working in HDMI and would default to AV2 even when not in reverse. I took my carpc apart and used a different HDMI wire which seemed to have helped for the screen not displaying, but I still haven't figured out how to make it stop go into AV2 all the time.
I should add that I'm using a reverse camera which auto-trigger when in reverse

Im on my 3rd screen controller now.somhow i was cooking the controller when i was turning on my HID spotlights.it wasnt like yours but it would constaintly reset the brightness levels to 5...and cook the auto switch to AV2..super annoying..i believe the controller is a bit sensitive..chinatobby has a tool to reflash the firmware as i believe mine have been corrupted.i havnt tried a flash as the tool is the same price as a new controller.when i was complaining about mine.chinatobby said to make sure the screen..controller...AV2 power wire and reverse camera were all on the same power and ground otherwise it will have problems.

Yep that's what I was thinking too... It sounds like the reverse sense wire is at +12v all the time. Quick test to disconnect it and see if problem goes away.

oh yeah I should have expanded more on that. The AV2 trigger is on a 12v wire that's running the reverse lights. So when I put it in reverse, it's picking up it's 12v from that wire. Right now the carpc is out of the car and I don't have a 12v source going to the reverse wire switch on the monitor board. But it still always starts on AV2. Even if I physically disconnect the av2 molex connected to the board so absolutely nothing is wired in. Also, if I disconnect and re-connect the hdmi, the board will not detect the video source and it won't switch automatically to HDMI. It's like the thing is frozen on AV2 unless manually switched.

I'll be doing more test in a few minutes though, now that I'm getting video from the HDMI after replacing the cable and tweaking some settings in the video resolution, I'll plug it back in the car, do test like:
manually switch it to HDMI and then put it in reverse to see if the auto trigger will work
start the PC with the car in reverse
shut down the car with the car in reverse

I'm not too hopeful but I'll start with that
