Double din unit, just use the screen?

Hi, long time lurker, just about to start a project in my 2008 Mazda 6. I had a full Nexus 7 in dash setup in my old Mazda 3 and now have the bug!!

I was looking at one of these units from China which fits into my dash seamlessly:

If I bought it just to use the screen with my own build car pc would that be possible?

Failing that, if I wanted to upgrade the components myself and flash it and install windows 8/android etc (whatever software I choose but you get the point!) how could I go about that?

    Thanks
    John

    Welcome mate!
That dash peice will be a easy start..buttons screen and facia
Is all well worth the price as it takes a lot of time to fab somthing up half as nice..
    Problems i can see are....
Screen quality could be woefull..might not be but chances are if you want to drive it from windows or android the screen res will be a huge step backwards from a nexus 7.
In my experience flashing of a chinese tablet/sterio/phone or anything is next to impossible unless you can do some serious rom building.
Next is 8" screens are not known for there brightness.most are quite low.
Some of the newer windows tablets have decent ones.these could be a option to swap into the new facia.
Mabee fit a dell venue pro 8" in the space and use the facias button board with a joycon.fit a slot loading dvd drive if needed and load your favourite frontend.
Nexus 7..odroid with the supplied screen
Options are limitless!! But most require some work.

Hi, thanks for the welcome, and the reply. I know quality may be an issue but I think I may be willing to take that risk in return for a factory fitted look. Never attempted fabricating or cutting a fascia before so wouldn't fancy trying that with a 7" monitor! Not the best at diy!

So if I rip the insides out, I can plug the screen into a car pc (not built yet) and it will still be touchscreen?

All I really want to use a car pc for is music, and I'm planning on a couple of webcams to record in a loop like a car dvr. Plus a good sat nav, I currently use sygic or waze on my Nexus 7. So as I'm not really interested in video not too bothered if screen quality isn't amazing.

However, as you say, brightness may be an issue. The nexus is fairly good for that.

I am thinking of two other options, 1 is buy a double din fascia and buy a double din size touchscreen to pop in it, or try to get the nexus to fit in like I did last time, or 2, try to mount a small screen at the bottom of the dash and leave the dash untouched. That will be easier but I'm worried about security leaving a 7" screen on display.

The actual building a pc side is the easy bit for me, just the screen.options I'm debating.

I like the look of the dell you recommended but would still have the problem of adapting a fascia to make it fit, trust me I'm useless at that stuff haha. I'll try to find the write up I did on my old Mazda 3 install, was a messy job but looked good (in the dark lol) for a first effort with a dremel!

If it was me i would get it and see how it goes. Most likley you could use the screen and touch panel from the dash facia you linked to...but you will need a screen driver board and a resistive touch to usb driver board...
Chinatobby on ebay will do a screen board to suit your needs but you will need the model number and native screen res from the actual lcd screen.
The touch board wont be hard..but i would reccomend getting one that uses a normal hid driver...so it will work out of the box with windows/android/mac and linux.

    Hi,
I have another question regarding a screen. I have just been into an electrical shop and saw loads of android tablets around the 35 mark (I'm in Poland at the moment). It got me thinking along the same lines as what I asked above, could I buy a cheap unit like this or a second hand one off ebay , open it up and somehow plug the screen into a car PC disregarding everything else? Could match it with a double din fascia so it still looked good and would be far cheaper than a Lilliput or Chinese unit?

I have a nexus 7 but don't want to experiment with something more expensive. I had a search but couldn't really find anything specific.

    Thanks

what i cant understand is the reason to dismantle an android unit as it can offer you what you want . On the other hand i think there are some lcds in ebay in this dimension that could match ir budget.

Bottom line for me . Stick with a cheap android unit bu a nice facia for ur car and u are ready to go, or buy a spare lcd from ebay with a driver board from chinatobby and connect this to the pc. But the first option is far cheaper than the second one.

Thanks. The main reason I don't want to settle for the tablet alone is one of the main things I want a car PC for is recording cameras to a hard drive, and also having music available via hard drive, a tablet won't manage this. Plus it's more of a project this way

The MP3Car store has this which should fit... http://store.mp3car.com/Direct_Fit_D..._p/dsh-032.htm save you a lot of work. Or hit the wreaking yard for the dash panel and make your own. Good luck SNO
