    16x2 LCD No display

I have a 16x2 LCD display connected to my parallel port. The cable is about 10m long. This worked fine until I changed the motherboard in my system. If I use a shorter cable, the LCD works fine, but I get no display with the long cable. I'm guessing this is due to a less powerful parallel port. Can anyone let me know where I can get information / schematics for a parallel port buffer / repeater or can anyone suggest an alternative? I need the long cable!

possible cheap hack via a couple of ttl buffer chips?
    lookup 74ls245 and the like
watch the direction (input vs output)
should be cheap enough to try

wouldn't be bi- directional work only for software that writes only
