Powering LCD from PC Power Supply?

Is it a good idea to power an LCD from the PC Power Supply? Would it cause any damage at all? At the moment it is being powered by a regulated 12V 500mA plug pack.

My LCD requires the following:
13.8V at 800mA

So why bother changing it and using more resorces from the PC's power supply????

splice it into an unused molex connector (white power plug to hard drives, cd-roms, etc)...yellow is 12v positive and black next to yellow is 12v negative. I do this to have it turn on and off with the computer.

More resources? I don't think so. If i were to use the plug pack in the car i'd then need to use a double adapter. Thats just plain stupid.

telekineticfool: The power supply puts out 15A on the 12V line, this isn't going to cause any damage to the lcd which only requires 800mA is it?

Hard wire the plug using a female socket behind the dash, link it off the back of the HU. Mine is wired in there and i have no problems and it saves wiring it back to the PC.

But what would be the point of doing that? The plug back runs off AC not DC, so its going to have to get power from the inverter. I'd rather run it off the PC power supply if it's not going to cause any damage. It's not like 800mA is going be be a resource hog anyways!

Sorry mate i thought you were using a DC car adapter. These can be picked up cheap from any electrical store and do the job fine..

It hasn't hurt mine...and besides, your PSU is a voltage source, right? You can't have it physically supply both voltage and current simultaneously...ohms law and all that V=IR stuff.

For my upcoming carputer I'm going to be wiring it to the computer's PSU. The LCD will turn off with the computer, and the PSU will act as a regulator, smoothing out the voltage and preventing power spikes and whatnot getting to the LCD. Also you will get immediate 12 volts when you switch on the computer, as opposed to having it hard wired to your car's 12 volt supply which gradually builds up to 12v in 2 seconds or so.
