steering wheel touch screen monitor??

Last week was the bayou classic in New Orleans. It is a weekend when the two big black colleges in LA play each other in the Dome. This attracts a whole car show full of "ballers" with their "bling,bling". Anyway "ballin'" is big down here. You know spending all your money on flashy things while still living with Mom. So alot of these "ballers" have TVs in their steering wheel. I saw alot of them, probably more than ten, I even saw an escalade with over 10 tvs. Well I now know it could definetly be done, even though I don't know anyone who has installed one(I think they are illegal). I think it could be a prime location for a touch screen monitor. There are so many people in hear I know one of you has tried this.

Another idea how about a heads up display. My roomate has a 98 Grand Prix and his speedometer and radio station can be displayed on the windshield. Has anyone tried this. With Heads Up you could look at your screen while keeping your eyes on the road.

Just some ideas.

who needs airbags when you're "ballin'"?

Or what if your airbag already went off? This would be cheaper than re-instalation assuming your car still works.
I dunno its just an idea.
MTV just showed diary of Ludacris and he had a steering wheel mounted TV in a STS cadillac.
I'm just saying it's possible.

The only thing is, if you're trying to use it while turning a sharp corner, it's going to be upside down or sideways.
Perhaps you could mount it on a bearing with a weight at the bottom so it's always right side up. Or you could use the (Mercury switch maybe?) thing they use with those clocks that you can flip ovre and they change modes.

Really, what would someone need a steering wheel screen for? What would you display on it? My Pimpin' gold-dipped Escalade rollin' on 28" rims with a 60" Plasma screen in the dash needs a 3" LCD mounted on the steering wheel for that movie theater effect. :)

Anyway, it does sound like a cool-looking install, but nothing more. It would be better to mount an LCD projector so it displays a screen across your windshield.

BTW: There's lots of people that build their own HUD's. `The factory ones are VFD's, but some people just use the brightest LCD's they can get. VFD's are the only way to keep it from washing out in direct sunlight.

Can I ask a question without it sounding like a flame?? What is the 'purpose' of the screen being there other than for show?? Is it even a touch screen? Are there other places you could have put a screen?

Yeah for show...Not touch screen....I have a 10.4" touchscreen going in a custom center console, and will have more TVs. It won't be in use while driving. Just while parked at a car show. But then It's cool to be different.

Will have more pictures at the end of summer when it gets out of the body shop.

I would have said it is quite practical to have the touch screen on your steering wheel. Afterall, why do we like having steering whell controls for stereos? Alright with steering wheel controls they are designed so you don't move your hand from the wheel but still the screen will be right infront of you, just below were you look at your speedo etc so why not have one there and it will be easy to reach when you are sitting right back in your pimped up ride! Just make sure the glass has plastic over it incase your head hits it! I dont think orientation is a problem as I'm not sure playing with any car PC touch screen is a good idea when making a sharp turn - but the bearing mount would look pimp - just like those new Rolls Royce hub caps.

PS Could look sick if you had a twin monitor set up so you can still control stuff while DVDs etc play on the main monitor int he dash or summit.

OK, that's half way reasonable. Like I said, didn't mean to flame. I can reason with it being just for show and not when driving.

how are you going to get the wires to it? Will you have to disconnect the wires when you want to steer?
