the hinge joint allow the screen to fold from the foward position, the one that allows it to slide into the dash, to the flat position, that allows you to see it. the pivot joint is between the hindge and the screen, so you can rotate the screen to a better viewing angle. the way it slide in and out of the dash anyway u can make, such as sliders that are used in drawers, or ball bearings, or just a track. the important thing about these kinds of joints is that they hold their place, unlike a door hindge that's just loose.

are you talking about a hinge like this?

This came with my XM Roady i just got, it swivels to the left/right and top/bottom
Im thinking about ordering an extra one for my screen.

My idea is pretty similar in some parts, but the general idea is pretty much the same. The problem is looking for the main part, the swivels thing. I will be going to national ace hardware in couple minutes, if I find anything, i will let you guys know. if it works, i will let you guys know. if i don't reply, it didn't work.

Here is an Idea (Get friendly with a Local overhead door retailer)

they get Demo units that are only 8 to 10 inches wide and if you are friendly enough you might be able to buy an old one.

A Buddy of mine got a hold of a 8 inch wide rolled door demo unit with the motors and all the hardware its currently covers his center console we he turns on the radio it opens up.

Ok, I think I got the spring hinge working. I just need to install it and test it. I just came back from National Ace Hardware and bought a spring hinge.

    Something similar to this:

I just need to make the sliding rail and the box. By the way, I think the lilliput 7" lcd is too big to fit in dash right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I will keep you guys posted if everything goes as planed.

Last week I experimented with an old CDROM drive. The tray mechanism wouldn't be that hard to modify to push the LCD panel out and pull it back in. You just have to dremel off a bunch of useless crap that the CD needed. Also relocate/rewire the eject button. That shouldn' be a big deal. Just supply it with a molex power conencter and you're good to go.

This could work well with the spring hinge idea to pop the panel up. Another alternative was to hook a cable to the back of the LCD going to some point on the frame. With just the right length, it would pull the panel upright as it was pushed out, and let it back down when it went back in. The trouble with that is how to coil the cable up while it retracts, so as not to bind/tangle up.
    So far:
    M10000 Nehemiah, 1Gb RAM, Opus 90w PS, Buffalo Tech WLI2-USB2-G54, 160 Gb HDD, GlobalSat BU-353 GPS, iGuidance, Zippy EL-610, Panasonic CW8123B Slim Slot CDRW/DVD, 10" Lilliput, Sony XA-300, Sony CDX-MP30 Head, OBD-II

I don't think a cd rom drive would have the power to push out a 1 pound lcd screen heck if you loosely put your finger on one and hit eject it stops the tray.

in regards to the lilliput fitting in the dash, it just barely manages to fit into my dash.

question about the spring hindge, in the picture it looks as it it springs the hindge open and then would stay there. in regards to the lcd coming out of the dash, it would be in the open position, and then it would need to bend to an angle, to make it viewable. does your spring hindge do that? i am i misenterpreting the picture? if it does work its a great find.

    finally!

i just thought of the right name ive been trying to call the type of parts ive been looking for- "Positional Pivot(swivel) Joint" and a "Positional Hinge." That finally describes exactly they are. the lcd comes out of the dash, and then you manually move the lcd into place (flat with the dash) and the hinge holds its place, then if the angle isn't that good swivel the screen up of down, and the pivot joint holds its place. just like gumby!, except instead of little metal wires, its joints.

BTW, i checked google for them thinking i finally figured it out, and it didn't find anything, so im still no further ahead. maybe someone else will have better luck.
