Question In need of creative display ideas

    Here goes..

I've had the idea for a smaller scale carputer in the past, and then I found this site. I never knew so many options were out there in this field. I decided instantly I wanted to put one in my car.

Then I ran into two contradicting problems. As I am still in a ghetto highschool, which means that anything shiny and electronic will be stolen within a week. If I'm going to invest my time and money into a carputer, I obviously DON'T want it getting stolen. But then, also because I'm in highschool, I have no money. (no money for a in-dash screen or a nice alarm.) So I have 2 mutually exclusive problems.

The first solution I saw was to get a smaller text based screen and hide it under the dash

Example(The dash slides down over the screen when not in use.) But this idea was dissapointing because I'd much rather have a color touch screen.

So I'm stuck, I realize this is kind of vague, but there's not really a whole lot more info I can give you, because I'm still in the brainstorming process. I'm also getting a new (to me) car at the beginning of this summer, so I can't describe the dashboard in detail. If anybody's seen anything that may help me with an idea to conceal my screen, I would greatly appreciate it.

a lot depends on the car, and the amount of free dashboard space you have.

you could design a revolving screen, ie it turns 180 degrees when you park so the back looks like a bit of dash.

    hmm

interesting idea, that would probably take an absurd amount of dash space tho. Does anybody have any pics of one ? That may help me

if it rotates about the horizontal axis (ie the middle of the screen) you only need the depth of half the screen height.

I made my xenarc screen hide away by sliding in and out of my center console through a homemade plexiglass housing with tracks on the sides cut out for the screen to mvoe in. http://filebox.vt.edu/users/cholbroo/g35/

wow, man.. that's awesome. That kinda thing would be perfect for me, but I dunno that I have the expertise in fiberglass and mounting to be able to accomplish something like that. I may teach myself if I'm going to be doing this project though.

    I like it.
