Forgot to say. It's also supposed to be a sunshine readable display...
I found these of a local Seattle store (Vetco).
The problem is non-standard connectors. There is a 2 pin power cable with plug and a very small and thin 14 pin socket and 15 pin socket.
It is supposedly the screen from an Intermec 6640 tablet pc. I contacted them about whether it could be used as the screen for an auto pc and whether drivers were available. I got told it was proprietary so there was no way to get drivers. I've asked if that includes the potential vga socket (the 15 pin one) but so far have not received a response.
The body of the lcd is maybe a cm thick and it's only slightly bigger than the actual screen. Whilst it's too big to integrate into the dash, at $10 I'd be very happy to have it on a stand - maybe even directly in front of me since not a whole lot happens in the small amount of view just above my car bonnet that would end up obscured.
Any idea if its possible to determine if that 15 pin socket is VGA and, if so, the pin out to make a custom cable?

crack it open and look on the PCB for any words or symbols in the etchings around the P/J..
Do they have any more, send me one and I'll check it out.
$10, can't go wrong
They still have a few, I talked it over with Dan Marsh (another Seattle forumer) and we concluded that it's a sort of a laptop LCD which will need its separate controller to operate. Otherwise they would cost much more.

It's very thick for just a laptop lcd panel. But the tablet pc it is supposed to be for was a ruggedized one. So maybe it is.
Although all laptop lcds I've seen have not had an actual real socket for the signal - just something a ribbon cable would fit into. This has an actual 15 pin socket although it's very thin.
i ordered a couple of them the other day. two of them for $28 shipped wasn't too bad and i figure it will give me something to mess around with until i get everything else for my project rounded up. the guy on the phone told me it was a Kyocera screen ... which somewhat confuses me because the only 10.4 tft they make is only 640*480 as far as i could tell. http://global.kyocera.com/prdct/ios/lcd/104_e.html might be it I'm not really sure if they ever told me a model number. but I'll update you guys if i find anything else out when i get them. from the people who have actually seen them at vetco do the picture on that webpage look anything like them??? if that is the screen it shouldn't be too hard to find a controler for it.
don't worry i know i usually don't make much sense
They has some other lcds that were something like 600x200 - I hope you aren't getting those.
You may want to look at Earth LCD to see if they offer a controller for the screen you have. I have run into the same problem - in terms of coming across cheap screens, but getting a controller and inverter costs $100-$200.
Usually it ends up not being worth it. But if you can make your own, that would rock. GL with that.
Arathranar: nope, i got the correct ones.
SnyperBob: yeah but here is the way i look at it. even if the controller ends up costing me $200, i got a sunlight readable 10.4" touchscreen with a spare screen for $220. if it doesn't work I'm only out $20, i can acept that.
i don't know what the guy on the phone was smoking when i talked to him, it does say intermec at least twice on the screen. *runs off to find a controller* I"ll keep you guys updated on anything i find out.
update: (small step forward) using the model number convections off earthlcd's inventory list I've decided that dispite the fact that it says intermec in a couple place the panel is in fact a kyocera. the label on the back of the panel says ... KHB104SV2AC and earthlcd has a KHB104SV1ADG83 listed as a kyocera. i think tommorow i will shoot off an email to intermec, kyocera, and earthlcd to try to get more info. google has netted me nothing as of yet
