    1. the one used in Hummer...., can't remember the name. they ship it together with their thermal imaging system. based on LED projection.

    2. MicroHUD. based on laser projection system. only suitable for data projection.

NEITHER systems are within affortable range.

one pseudo HUD system is use by the intrument gauge company. It's not a true projection per se. THey use bright VFD with reverse display. However, it's a custom device that require their main unit to function.

I contacted both Matrix Ortibal and Crystalfontz regarding customised "flipped" VFD. both said no plan for production.

so... short of doing something drastic to my MO, i am stuck
oh so thats why the H2 was so expensive. it was the HUD.

Hang on.....if it is actually technically illegal to be running a screen in view of the driver and visible from outside the car (there are a few exceptions for GPS in some states/countries) don't you think putting a screen horizontal on the dashboard where EVERYONE can see it is asking for trouble?

I have a question, on laptop LCDs, they have a reflective backing and a light, what does an LCD look like on, without the light and the backing? Anyone know?

99+% of laptop LCDs are transmissive, not reflective (the light is behind the LCD, rather than in front, and there is no reflective layer.) Without the bright backlight, it's very very dim.

If you're getting at what I think you are, and thinking of putting a stripped down LCD in front of the windshield, I don't think TFTs are transparent enough. It can certainly be done with monochrome LCDs though, like those clear clocks or LCD dimming windows.

I had an idea of putting my laptop LCD with broken backlight as my hud. I didn't do it, but I do beleive this is possible. The screen can be pretty transparent if you keep your desktop white. However, you won't see anything at night.

How about taking apart an LCD screen and pasting the thin film on your windshield? I wonder if any of them are clear enough for that really to work.

Just a shame I can't justify a carpc to use it on anymore.
