Someone on here claims to have done it, I think the trick is to keep the inverter as close to the screen as possible, or you will not get good brightness at all. I believe i read all about it on this forum somewhere.
Hope it works out.
I have an old laptop and I'd like to mount the screen on the back of it to make it sort of kiosk like. Any tips on finding a cable that would fit? I've attached a fairly poor picture of it, what are the chances? I figure I could extenmd the power one without too much trouble but I'm not sure I want to mess with the video.
It's a Compaq Presario laptop BTW.

At the moment I'm gutting the laptop, as the screen cables are not long enough to reach if I put the screen on backwards I thought I might reassemble the boards on the back of the screen instead. It's amazing how many bits there are in these laptops once you go at it with a screwdriver and torq set.
Here's a little FAQ on laptop LCD that I wrote a while ago

PS: my early version of my very first setup (the one that's voted most ghetto) had the gutted laptop sit right behind the screen, in the dash. You could probably do that if you aren't concerned about your casing and things like floppie drives. Although I do recommend to keep the casing as it is to avoid shots circuits and to keep the stock laptop battery inside for your standby needs.

I'm not sure I can extend it with the wires and keep the inverter close, there are two wires from the screen to the inverter daughter board, I assume video and power. The daughter board then mounts onto a connector on the MB, no cable involved. As such it is looking as though I need to keep the daugherboard and motherboard real close.

Oh, I was afraid this would happen. You might be able to use a separate inverter though. Theoretically you should be able to use an inverter extracted from a battery-powered blacklight or any other battery powered device that uses neon tubes.Originally Posted by ukchris

I just took the screen apart and it looks like the inverter is actually separate and could be extended quite easily, that doesn't help me much though as the video cable is still only about an inch long and is a sort of fabric ribbon cable so I still have the distance issues with the daughterboard.
Chris.
Try www.molex.com they might sell you a custom connector that you will be able to extend.
