I say: nice project! But I have one question... The distance between the screen and your dash... won't that be much? I like your idea on using springs, I have been thinking about this too...
Ok guys im building my own LCD holder but it will work like a motorised LCD but it wont have motors.
The basic idea is to make a LCD slide out and up then u must manually fold the LCD down and push it back in when done.
So what im doing is building a case for this to slide out and open up.
The theory behind this is SPRINGS yeah im not crazy :P
What happens is when the LCD is pushed inside the case the spring streches so when u push the button to open the LCD the spring contracts and slides the LCD out of the case.
Ok so the spind just slides the LCD out right?
Then we have another spring which pulls the top of the LCD backwards to the case ro open set the LCD in view.
There will be a small wheel with foam on it at the top of the case so the LCD slides out smoothly and then when the end finally gets out it will angle the LCD so u can view it.
I will start building this soon and yes it will work some basic testing has been done and i have thought bout it all like slowing the speed the LCD slides out etc.
So what do u guys think?

Hmm, nice one!!
My question would be how well would the springs work when it's coming up?
It's not gonna be smooth right? You'll need to push it beyond a point before the springs kick in and then it's gonna just suddenly spring up.. I think you need some way of dampening it... LEGO technics hydrolics?![]()
Yeah iv got a way to dampen it.
When the LCD slides out the Spring will be very tense what will happen is there will be a rail on the part that slides out which is going to be connected to alot of cogs which slow it down as it slides out.
I don't know how to draw it im probably not explaing it right![]()
But the sliding out will be smooth cause of the cogs then the LCD will angle up pretty smoothly but i need to work that out a bit more.
Also the space between the dash and the LCD won't be that much as i plan to have it in the dash further and a fake cassette face so no1 will steal it :P
Or i might make a front which looks like the face has been removed so they wont bother trying to get it.
You could just use a OLD cdrom drive to slide the LCD out then the spring to make the LCD angle up
Did I actually answer your questions? lol![]()

have you checked out digital world wide? they have the DIN casing already built, springs and all....
Does the LCD automaticlly slideout and swivel up with the springs?

are you sure that the springs would slide the LCD out rather than shoot it out. It needs some sort of a damping mechanism like perhaps a flywheel after the cogs.
Carputer currently 'ghettoed' into car!!!

But not in stock......they have the DIN casing already built, springs and all
graham:-)
Yeah it will slide out not shoot out I'v thought it all through just need to get some parts and start building.Originally Posted by choyak

When i have it made and have it all working properly i'll put up a lil how-to on building 1.
I could just build a motorised 1 if i wanted to but i dont have enough time to do that then build a PIC to control it.
Altho anyone could build a motorised 1 as u can get PIC kits for like $20 then u just need to get the right motor then hook it up through a pulley type of system![]()
