Matrix Orbital for the displays in USB, serial or parallel, in assorted colors & sizes
LCDC for the software, with plugins for damn near anything you'd want, including WinAmp.

I use Matrix Orbital (can see in Build PICs in my sig). I also made a plugin for OpenMobile (see thread here) to manage most models of their character type serially connected units.

They are actually quite a delight to work with.
