new ssr, xenarc in dash or pull-out?

Hi all, my first post!

I just got a new 2005 chevy SSR and i'm hoping to put together a carputer using a Dell Inspiron 600m. I plan to get a docking station to facilitate powering it on and a DC adapter to power it. Also thinking of getting the new Audigy 2 ZS pcmcia card for sound.

My current question is regarding the display. The car comes with a 2din stereo recessed in the dash, and i think just putting a xenarc in there would look sweet. my main concern is easy volume control, and am/fm (but i could live without that). so i guess my options would be to fit the xenarc right in, would that be difficult? would it be best to remove the housing, or does it look like it might fit behind the dash with the housing on?

alternatively i could get the digitalww pull-out, but i'm concerned about the clearance, plus it just wouldn't be as sweet...

what do you guys think?

You can get a radio tuner card. I have one that I use with a prog called radiator. I use Frodoplayder to control everything including radiator. As for the screen, I would fiberglass the bezel into your stock dash. Then mount the screen to the bezel from behind and put it all back together. That would look sweet.

with the xenarc u need to slighty trim the left and right edges for it to fit into a 2din slot, well I did on my laguna I had, the lilliput I didnt need to..O and I wouldnt bother with a indash thing.. just go for mounting the sceen straight in

cool! i have seen the usb radioshark - is that decent? pci doesn't work since i'll have a laptop...

when you say i'll trim the edges, do you mean just trim the stock bezel (without taking it apart) and it will fit right in?

Your gonna have to take it apart to make it look right. Even if you didn't need to trim it. What most people do (the ones that look good) is pull the dash bezel out and take the bezel off of the screen. Fiberglass the screen bezel to the back side of the dash bezel. Then mount the screen to the bezel from the backside. If you don't feel up to it, there are a lot of stereo shops who deal with fiberglass that could handle that. But it's really not that hard buy the looks of your dash.
