Question Motorised touch screen/VGA - What's the frickin' problem?

    Hey All,

I'm pretty new here but not so new that I'm not aware of the ongoing saga of the mythical motorised-touchscreen-VGA-holy-grail. So I was wondering what makes this so difficult that nobodies come up with one yet - as far as I can tell there is no bleeding edge technology required to make it work as all the seperate parts are already in use - the motorised bit, the VGA bit - yet it seems impossible for anyone to bring this together in one unit. Am I missing something here?

    Good Question
and i wish i could answer
    but...... i cant
well i could say theres not enough interest in such a unit even though there are thousands of mp3car users plus other carputer sites around the world whose forum members would easily part with there monies! for such a unit but does that figure count for enough to R&D Build and Deploy such a product who knows??
prehaps we need a on site poll as to who would use such a unit if one was avliable
there are already both non motorized (for sale) and motorized (nearly for sale) at Armens Website Digitalww.com
as for a complete product that is already assemobled with a vga and touchscreen there are about 5 models that have been submitted on here over the past 2 years or so but non that have come to light i think i could be wrong though

I would definitely have to say it's demand. While there seems to be many of us here who would kill to have one, it's probably not high enough of a demand for a company to get really interested and make lots of money with it. That's what it's all about nowadays... (the mula), isn't it?

    Sure it would.
Everyone on MP3Car.com thinks so, as well.
The rest of the world doesn't give enough of a **** to generate enough demand to spur the manufacturers toward manufacturing in-dash motorized touchscreen VGA monitors.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

i'd say demand too, the demand for a motorized indash VGA monitor is almost non-existant, most of the in car displays people use are just for video for a DVD player not a computer so they use cheaper lower res monitors for those with just standard video inputs.

These places don't have to make a few hundred thousand units to make a profit. They have it down like a system. They did custom orders for me on Q-500 orders. that's nothing. There is plenty of demand, and all the companies are working on them. The problem I last heard from GAIN / xenarc was that they were having issues with the motorization not being reliable. So by waiting, we are getting a better product.

Thanks for the response guys, I had considered a relative lack of demand as the most probable reason but this kind of lost weight with me when I see some of the crap you can buy for PC's on the overclocking/modding sites - I can't believe they ever shift that stuff! I think the motorised VGA is definitely a case of 'build it and they will come'. There are enough geeks out there who have florescent lights and a window in their Tower PC box and they maybe looking for something new - I think that an in-car PC could be that (for the ones old enough to drive). It's got good bang for your buck relative to modifying a car with HKS this and Blitz the other, and it doesn't matter if your wheels are poor because an in-car PC can make it a proper ride. Just my $0.02...

No insult intended to any forum goers with LED infested PC's at home

It all depends on what type of motorised setup you want.

Attached is a simple drawing of a LCD mod for a car where you have a comparment ontop of the dash (its a lid on the dash that holds change etc like in a WRX etc.

Simple to make it pops out of the dash and pushes the lid up and then pops back down and closes the lid also if a theif is in the car he wouldn't notice it

Theres no possible way the motor in a cd-rom drive would be powerful enough to lift an lcd screen in such a way.
