    Ghetto-rigging lilli buttons

    Hey all,

Long-time fan of the site, just got the carputer running in-house. One problem, though.

That's the lilliput, as put together by Patrick over at http://www.tmz.com/wrx/, plus the rest of the components in the back there.

It's awesome and looks like it will fit great, but there's one problem. Do you see how there's about 3/4" of shifting of the image? There's a black bar up the left side, and the image clearly disappears behind to the right.

The monitor settings has a way to shift the image around, but here's the catch.

The IR controller doesn't seem to be attached anymore, nor does the front-panel controller. So I cant think of any way to get into the monitor settings.

    I've found this page...
    http://www.digitalww.com/VGA_Lillipu...ash_HowTo.html
    which includes this image...

The left side is what I'm interested in. So I know which pin controls the menu button and the left and right buttons. Which is all I need. And I only need it once to get it right, then I'll never need it again.

So, does anyone know how to trick those pins into thinking the button has been pressed? Just the once, so I can adjust the settings and get out. No need for an elegant solution, just something I can do that will work.

P.S. If your solution is better than my ghetto power button trick, I will give you a candy. When I first applied power to the M10000, it wouldn't start. I realized I had no power button, so I found which pins would normally be attached to a power button. Then I applied power to the ATX PS, touched a jumper from an old harddrive to the pins and then removed it quickly. This simulated a pressing of the power button. Same thing for the reset button, which was just the next 2 pins down the row.
Here's a visual aid. The pins are on the left, and the jumper I used is on the right.

Probably just touch the ground pin to the pin for the button you want.

I thought of that. But the only ground pin I see is for the IR. Does that matter?

Why don't you just plug your ribbon cable back into the board and the button PCB and make the changes?

Okay, it is ground. Just take a wire and ground it to the common ground on the board and then you can touch the other end the pin(s) corresponding to the button you want to "press". I would suggest a very small wire so you don't get multiple button presses by grounding 2 or more pins at the same time. It won't hurt anything but would get very frustrating I'm sure.

Sweet. A job well done. I managed to activate the "auto adjust" or whatever it was. And it's *nearly* perfectly centered. If I had the panels themselves, I could do better. But it's good enough.

Okay, second question. I do get some ghosting some time. The best way that I have found to get rid of it is to power cycle the monitor. But since it's powered off the molex coming from the power supply, I cant think of any easy way to cycle the power without rebooting the whole computer. Would it be possible to just rig a simple manual switch somewhere along the yellow wire running to the monitor? That way I could kill the power and reset it whenever it goes ghosty on me.

Anyone think of any problems with that idea?

Yep. They connect to pin 8 (gnd).
    Menu is pin 4
The next one over is pin 1 (up?)
And last button is pin 3 (down?)

Edit: Sorry, it's just like the 1st post pics.

Oh, and a note: Always make sure that cable is secure. If it comes loose, it can turn the ribbon cable into a fuse. Furtunately it can be reversed and you just lose the red LED.
