nah, those marlboro's are a few days worth....

I bought another alpine d300 headunit on ebay..... then plugged it in.... SAME THING!!! just a white screen....... then I tried the little dc-dc converter box that came with the head.... it works!!! that was the whole problem.... so now I have a spare d300 headunit the alpine tech support guy said it can't be the dc-dc converter.... if that went bad the head wouldn't function at all... he was WRONG..... cost me close to $400 to find this out the hard way....

I hate it when tech support sucks.... alpines usually o.k....

yeah, I half thought of that, but I'm going for a rear pc.... I lready set the truck up for networking with a kr1 wireless router & a networked netgear hardrive array

I might just sell it back on ebay... or just keep it as a spare for parts...

UPDATE: The screen is DEAD.... RIP :)

well I knew it, even back then....

I left the screen intact until right after a local meet that we just had..... again at that meet I was constantly made aware of the fact that from the passengers side the screen looks "funny".... I was actually telling people that were checking it out "here, look at it from the drivers seat..." the universal concensus was pretty much all the same, it would be awsome if it looked like that from the other side.... Especially since I even have a keyboard above both the drivers & passengers side visors..

I have been putting off trying to fix this for a long time because I knew that there was a high probability of damaging the lcd.....

I even contacted several companys about sending out the screen to have this done professionally, which I always thought would be worse case....

all of the companys I contacted pretty much told me the same thing, it isn't as simple as just changing out the filter layers in the lcd... I always was under the impression it was... the polariser for the lcd isn't even inside the lcd.... it is attached to the glass in front of the lcd..... while it is possible to replace the polariser it isn't a magical cure all for viewing angle correction.... & for the large part the viewing angles are more determined by the actual construction & design of the lcd itself.... bottom line, no one would be able to tell me with any certainty at all how much better they could make the viewing angle improve, if even at all.....

the best quotes came from a company that told me they could take the screen & test it & play with it..... it wouyld cost me several hundred just for exploritory & testing..... IF they could come up with a decent corse of action with the screen, it would amount to around $700 all said & done, & even at that, they couldn't really tell me that $700 will solve my problem, the opinion was that it was pretty likely that it wouldn't!!!

after spending a lot of time doing a lot of research & talking to quite a few different companys, I decided that I was going to take it apart anyway & change the guts the way I originally planned...... worse case I just have to get a new better lcd right?......it should be so simple

soooo... to make a long story even longer... I took the screen apart, changed over the guts.... reassembled & tested..... it looked exactly the same.... a bit brighter actually with the cut down guts of the 17" fujitsu panel, but the viewing angle was the same..... at this point I started playing with different combinations of sheets from both the donor screen & the original.... in & out several times..... it was only a matter of time before I started getting lines in the panel.... then half of the display went out........ toasted.... I kinda expected this even at this point... & to tell you the truth I wasn't even upset, I almost think I subconsiously destroyed it on purpouse, knowing that it just isn't acceptable at this point...... I have to fix the screen to the point that I am satisfied with it.... & as it was I just ain't satisfied.....

turns out that there are only 4 different lcd's in manufacture today that use this 800X1280 12.1" widescreen type display.... & out of the 4 different screens only one other was used in the dell 700m, it's a samsung..... & the viewing angles are pretty much just as ****ty as the au optronics panel I have now.....

so now the delema..... I can get another panel to replace this broken one, get it back in & be where I was..... just admit defeat & settle..... my wife really could care less if she can see the screen..... but it's not about that...... I care!

research screens..... I've spent alot of time doing this.... & the sad thing is, I can actually have what I want..... just not with the 700m & not with the 12.1" widescreen....

SOOOOO, the options for me now are to just replace the panel for a few hundred, OR..... something quite abit more radical.... to the tune of ripping everything out & starting over on a 3rd version of my install......., including bying a latest greatest sunlight viewable 160 deg. all around viewing angle tablet...... it won't be a wide screen & I'd have to redo the bezel a bit to acomidate a 12.1" standard 4:3 screen.... still portrate mode at 768X1024...

hmm.... decisions, decisions..... wish I could just settle for what I had, but it just isn't good enough for me I guess..... still deciding on my next course of action.... any thoughts.... besides telling me that i'm nuts... I already know that

there seems to be only one real chioce when it comes to wide angle lcd's in a size small enough for my dash.... check here to see what I'm talking about.......

one of the hottest uses of these hydis wide angle lcd's is in the new fujitsu t4020 tablet..... boasting 160 deg. viewing angles both left & right, as well as up & down.....

I just ordered a t4020 tablet from fujitsu... & I got it with the optional indoor/outdoor screen... transflective.... with 160 deg. viewing angles all around...., these displays are supposed to be really awsome.... when I get it I'll play with it in the car... I'm not saying that I'm going to butcher this new tablet to install it in my car.... but the possibility is there..... I do want to add another pc anyway.... the dell that I have in the dash now can serve as second pc with this tablet becoming primary...

I really am still looking for a suitable replacement for my screen.... & if I can find something it would be a whole lot cheaper & easier to go that route..

the panel I have now is rated at 40/40/20/40 viewing angles.... that is left/right/up/down.... in my install up is right..... so the 20 deg viewing angle to the right is my problem.... it was great from the drivers side with only 40 deg.... so what I need is something with at least 40 deg up & down... so the passengers side can look as good as the drivers...

    still researching......

it may even be possible for me to have the tablet "dock" in the dash.... without having to butcher it... & to be removable.... might be too big for that though.... I'll see...

TC, I am sorry to here about the the screen, I almost feel partly responible as one of your viewing angle conversations at the meet was with me

I dont know how much help this might be, especailly since you have the table comming with basicly the same viewing properties, but Ibm has a technology they have been useing on there recent laptops called flexview. I have it on my t42 and I can attest to the fact you can see the screen from any angle, if i can see any part of the actual lcd, I can see what is displayed on it. The resolution is rediculously high (mine is 1400 x 1050 on a 15" 4:3) which might be a hinderance in a car, but as far as viewing angle its insane.

I have not looked into it but there is a new Z series offered in 16:9 screen formats, perhapes one of them would be the right size to replace the screen you had.

Here is a link to an artical on flexview.

I just did alittle homework and found out my idea is no good

1- the z series only comes in 14 and 15 inch

2- there x series has a 12" but it is 4:3 not 16:9 without flexview

EDIT: there is however a flexview 12" x60 tablet (170 degree viewing angle all directions) but it is still 4:3 and not 16:9

15" screens are easier to get with wide viewing angles....most smaller laptop screens suck as soon as you start to look at them from above,

there is no panel in 12.1 wxga with anything better than 20 deg on the up direction.BOE hydis is currently developing a 65/65/65/65 1 ch lvds screen that might work if I can sort the wiring schematics.... but it's still under development... I spoke to a guy there who kinda spoke english & he's saying maybe 3rd qtr .. but they'll contract the oem's & I may not be able to really get my hands on one for a real long time

the laptop/tablet/ convertable I got has what's supposed to be a sweet screen... 160 all 4 ways..indoor/outdoor screen... you will be able to see the image good even from outside the car.... this will make a huge difference in the overall install & just make it right...

my rear dropdown screen is also a wide angle screen at 170 deg... it looks awsome no matter where you are.... even outside beside the truck.... the screen I broke sucked in comparison looking at it from the side...

I'm a little unsure about using a 12.1 non-wide because it will be wider in portrait mode, & be wider than the inside edge of everything else in my whole center console.... the 12.1 wide just fit so perfect, like it was made for it... I can pull of expanding the area, but I'm not too sure I want to do that....

I could get a 10.4" 4:3 to fit perfect, but that's as small as I'd want to go, & the screen choices in this size are nearly imposible to get your hands on, toshiba makes one panel, hydis makes another... but no one has them.... & even if they did, the panel will be over $400 alone... maybe $500...I won't be able to drive the panel from the on board lvds anyway, because the firmware used in the video card won't be correct... the only panels I can drive suck

going vga it would then be possible to get a board to drive the screen,maybe.... & if you did the setup's gonna be over $700-$800 said & done ..... I won't be able to see my machine post on the screen anymore using it as an external monitor

the best way to get a kick *** screen & everything necissary to drive it & use it may be to buy a complete machine....

    this
    is the tablet
I got the tablet at a real cheap price... ebay auction & from fujitsu direct.... it's referbished & has a 90 day warentee.... I'f I reallly decided to install it I'd void the warrenty way before 90 days...

taking into acount this screen alone would be around $800 IF I could even get my hands on it & everything else necissary.... add to that the fact that it includes a great pentium M pc... 1.73 w/533 fsb. runs ddr2... and tablet edition,... a legal copy at that I want to add another pc anyways....

all I can say before seeing it in my hands at this point is maybe...

all I really want is a perfect display... that's it....
