put the 8" lilli back in today temp'd with duct tape.... boy was I spoiled with that broken screen... it looks like total crap in comparison.... I don't even think I'll be browsing & reading on my way into work until I get a good lcd back in here

I'm still seriously considering just getting a replacement panel & living with it the way it was.... it WAS awsome from the drivers perspective.... perfect really...... we'll see...

I have a toughbook that I use for work & the thoughts behind getting that fujtsu tablet are to maybe replace the toughbook.... with also the thought of maybe in the car.....

as you can see I don't know what I'm doing with this yet...

I'm thinking the Motion LS800 would make a wonderful all-in-one car PC if it only had a touch screen:
Daylight readable screen (if you pay for that option).
Built in battery so you could use standby rather than hibernate.
Built in docking connector on the bottom that could be used for other USB devices.
    Fast mobile chip.
    Reasonably sized shock-resistant hard drive.
Progress: 80% - Permanent install left.
Motion LS800 Tablet PC and dock.

I've been looking at the motion tablets too... this fujitsu I got has the same BOE Hydis lcd.... that's the real key to these tablets... the screen itself....

only motion & fujitsu are using them (of the major manufactures anyway), the ibm x41 tablet has similar tech, but I don't think they use the hydis lcd.... wide viewing angles on smaller screens are just now coming into play.....

I agree that a tablet like this can be an excellent install if you have the space (I do).....

I did get to see the fujitsu that I bought in person for the first time this weekend at a compusa... it wasn't on so I didn't see the screen in action, but in looking at the laptop/convertable/tablet/whatever I don't think I would want to use it as a replacement for my toughbook.... it's not sleek at all.... it feels kind of cheap in comparison... this increases the likelyhood of it being installed in the car alot..... even if I fell in love with the tablet concept & wanted it to replace my toughbook I may look for an alternative for that, maybe the x41 tablet... I've had ibm's before & they are awsome.... maybe a little spartan, but quality you can feel, & for some strange reason, an ibm laptop just feels better integrated with windows than any other laptop I used... can't explain it really...

I checked out all the laptops in compusa & they ALL suffer from these horible viewing angle issues... as soon as you go slightly off axis up or down the screen looks like crap..... by using portrait mode this becomes very obvious & is a big problem for portrait use, which is why manufactures are now starting to address the issue....

I am curious as to how well there "view anywhere" screen works as-is... if it is really good in the sun I may not even have to use my luxeon setup any more.... I'm already considering what to do with them to reuse them, if it comes to that.... but I could still add them to the 12.1" hydis screen if necissary.... I guess we'll see when I get this... hopefully tommorow....

I just got the tablet.... the screen looks better indoors than I expected, much better actually.... it looks like a normal regular lcd.... I'm happy about that, I was worried it'd have that transflective look that I've seen on older transflective laptops I've had.... well one itronix really... but it's much much better...

viewing angles are pretty good.... I don't know if I'd say perfect, but night & day compared to regular lcd's....

now for the sunlight viewability...... it is viewable in the sun...... but not in the same way my original screen was.... my original screen was just BRIGHT.... no matter what.... this screen is dim in the sun..... viewable for sure, but in a dim kinda way.... you can see it no problem, but it doesn't have the same look as a high brite screen......

I just got it & need to play with it more to make a decision as to what I'm going to do with it...... I might prop it in the dash & use it like that for a few days to see.... if I can keep it unbutchered & dockable it would be sweet I guess, well see

played with it tonight in the car... the viewing angles are great.. no matter where you are in or out of the vehicle you can see the screen great....... the difference is so much that I now know this is the screen I want in my dash, the original really sucked compared to this one except for the brightness

I found a new screen for the dell really cheap on ebay today so I now have a replacement coming for that, but even so, after seeing this screen in action..... this fujitsu is going in the car......

even at night though, I can see that this screen is not as bright as my alpine screen, which is around 400 nits or so... I'll see what it looks like during the day, I'd really like to be able to mount the whole tablet in one piece.. make it nice to take it indoors & set it up & stuff.. but if it's going to look too dim then it'll get chopped & gut the lcd for the luxeons... at this point I'd say that's the most likely thing that will happen here I think........

o.k., now it gets interesting..... I'ts been cloudy & it's suposed to rain all weekend....

it looks good during the day when it's cloudy & overcast,I'd like to see this in the sun in my car to see if it overall looks at least as good as my alpine screen, which I guess I'd be satisified with... but best chance of that won't be until at least monday according to the weather guessers...

I did get to see it briefly in direct sunlight out of the car & it is viewable, but at the same time very dim looking..... it looks like theres no backlight really, but you can see the images on the screen anyway... so I figured what the hell, let's take it apart & highbright it with the luxeons anyway.....

so I start to take it apart... remove the bezel & the first thing I notice.... theres no wires going to the digitizer glass?!?!

I fire up the laptop & the digitizer still works without the glass! I then lay a glass capacitive overlay over the lcd & guess what, it works with the pen even with a capacative overlay!!!!! why the hell wouldn't the manufactures build them this way.... I mean with a digitizer & a capacitive touchscreen at the same time a tablet would be even more apealing, & it works!

ok, so I remove the lcd.... it turns out that the digitizer is actually built into the lcd, not the front glass.... the problem is it's built into the rear of the lcd, a metal plate with a board.... this means that I can't do this one like my last with the luxeons unless I try to seperate the digitizer from the lcd itself.....

while I may be able to do this, I also run the chance of ruining this one.... my last lcd I am replacing for $110..... so ruining it wasn't such a big deal..... this one cost me over $1,400 taxed & shipped.... I got big balls when it comes to butchering & modifying electronics, but I'm not wreckless either.... this one scares me a little...add to this the hinge is a funky design & controls the orientation of the display... I don't even know yet what I'd have to hack there as I didn't disassembe the hinge yet, so I put it back togeather for now....

so now I have 3 choices.....

    1) replace the screen I had.... use it as it was, it was perfect to the driver, super bright & always visable regardless of sun... I'll just tell everyone it's a security screen ment only for the driver to see

2)put this tablet in, as-is without butchering it.... it will be very viewable from all angles, & still viewable regardless of the sun, BUT it's not super bright like my last one......

    3) push my luck, throw all thoughts of reason out the window, cross my fingers & try to seperate the digitizer... disassemble the lcd, cut out the rear & luxeon this thing too... all the while running the risk of ruining the whole thing.... this lcd is REALLY ireplacable... back when I first did the dell it was not readily available, but today there out there all over, this hydis lcd isn't....

so what's better, a super bright lcd that's only visable to the driver or a dim but sunlight viewable one that's visable to all?.....

****... I still don't know what I'm doing with this

....I took the dock apart & it's not really good to work with either.... it's all one board & I can't do what I originally though of, turning the connections back rather than to the side as it is now..... the way it is now isn't usable, the connectors would stick out way past my console..... I thought I'd be able to do something with it, but not really.....

this tablet convertable is pretty cool, but it's got a few things against it when it comes to installing in the car....

this is frustrating... at this point I'd spend whatever necissary within reason to come up with a good solution, but I still haven't found it.....

not going portrait is not really an option, the largest I can go with that is like 8"..... after my last screen I don't want to downgrade that much screen size..... a big screen that fits well is awsome & I have the space in portrait mode..... just can't hit the right solution.... maybe I should have gotten a regular tablet instead of a convertable.... they dock different & are available with the same screen.... back to ebay to look for a different model????? that could be a last resort

putting the original screen back in is starting to look like the sanest option...... I think I'll look some more into film enhancements...... there are possibilitys still there, but finding someone to actually bother with one piece is tough , I haven't found anyone yet except nathan at fpd, who gave me the quotes I stated earlier.... if he said $700 would definatley do it I would go that route, but he didn't seem too optimistic about it...

    still don't know....

ooooh, the sun is out, I'm runing to the truck to see this in the sun...

Motion have just released their bigger slate with a touch screen. I'm not sure it can be configured with the view anywhere screen however.

yeah, it is available,... they use the same screen... cost more & have much less horsepower than the fujitsu I picked, but it could be a good option at this point...

in the sun this screen looks good..... yeah it isn't as bright as the old one, but it looks perfectly fine really, even in direct sunlight.... it's impossible to wash it out.... it's a little dim overall, but I got used to insanely bright...this is not bad really...

so now it would all come down to dockability, which this one isn't good at at all... gotta look at the way the different choices dock..... but it's hard to tell which dock setup will work best without seeing them in person, & even then, hard to know until taken apart....

I don't want to have to buy a bunch of tablets to find the right one.....

gotta look at the way motion & fujitsu dock there different tablets....

The motions have a large connecter on the bottom (landscape). Then the dock connects to that and exposes usb, lan, sound & power connections. I'm looking an LS800 with view anyhere with an eye to whether it would be ideal fabbed into the dash but it really needs to be a touch screen which probably then screws up the view anywhere benefits.
