no, the built in touchscreen/digitizer isn't a problem too much.... actually theres just a plastic glass cover that looks like it has a slight purplish tint, like it's polarized coating maybe.... but not heavy like a toughbook would be... this cover isn't even the touchscreen though, the digitizer is built into the lcd & if you took this cover off your down to the raw lcd... you'd need it covered anyway to avoid scratching the lcd though, & the lense they use is probably fine left in place.

you do know that you'll have to use the pen right?... if it was permanently installed you could put a regular touchscreen over it... is that what you mean?

o.k., I think I'm on to something here.... I have been able to find a source for these BOE Hydis lcds.... I have learned through this source that Hydis also currently makes a 10.4" lcd with the same properties as the 12.1... 180 deg viewing angle all around & indoor/outdoor tech....

that by itself is just interesting, but actually using the screen is another story.... this is where it get's even more interesting.... I recently bought a few gateway tablet motherboards to play around with building carpc's from them... turns out there lvds too of course... these should be compatable with these screens, all the same specs.. 1024X768,1 ch lvds, 3 data, 1 clock.... but data sheets for both the lcd & the motherboard would have to be obtained & custom cables built.....

well I found someone who has this ability.... I am shipping him one of my gateway motherboards next week & he will attempt to get the hydis to run off it & build a custom cable... if this happens then I have developed a way of providing a carpc that's tiny, efficient & includes the best lcd's on the market for pretty cheap.... even if I build stainless steel cases for the motherboards, all said & done a bare bones system would probably total maybe $1,200 or so... including the pentium m processor & a sunlight viewable 10.4" lcd... just add ram & a hardrive & power supply & your good to go.... I think there'd be a market for these..... I could also provide a turn key solution including all hardware & a legal operating system for maybe $1,700 or so.... I think there'd be a market for that also... I haven't seen anything that is comprable to this anywhere.. sure the 10.4 is a little on the large side, but it isn't any wider than a standard 8" when used in portrait mode.... this should open the possibilities a bit for installing in more vehicles...

right now there is no solution on the market like this for this cheap.... I think I could develop & sell a few of these..., but this isn't my primary objective here originally.... I want to get one of these set up for my car.... if that works out well then I may explore the posibilty of marketing it...

the 10.4's don't have a digitiser attached... I would ultimately like to be able to mount this lcd on my luxeon box, then I'd have the best screen currently available anywhere...., even $4000 aircraft screens would have nothing over this one, actually mine would be better by having 180 deg viewing angle all around & of course it would be usable under any ambient lighting conditions

maybe then I'll be satisified with this

I got the new lcd.. got a controller & got it wired up.... gutted the lcd & prepped it for rear lighting... here it is on the luxeons. this screen is dramatically different from my first screen... this screen looks great no matter where I look at it from... this screen also seems to have MUCH MUCH better color while being boosted with backlighting.... it has a very high contrast ratio & looks way better than my last one...

    Looks nice.

I've been driving round with a Motion LS800 propped up in front of my crappy Lilliput. It's a gorgeous screen. It looks like I've got a piece of laminated plastic there. The only time I can't see what's on the screen is when the sun is exactly at the right place to be reflecting directly off the screen and into my eyes and I only have to move my head a little / turn the car every so slightly to workaround that.

And I've found that the dock will fit happily in the hole where the dashboard mini-glove box is in my Subaru with all the ports easily accessible at the back of the dock. I've been imagining the dock all nicely fibreglassed in and I think it will look very nice. Not OEM in the usual sense but for a PC you could take out of the car in a dodgy neighborhood or take into the house to continue to use, it's probably a nicer experience all round.

So I've been thinking about how much I really want touch. Using a pen isn't too much of a hardship and it would keep my greasy fingers off the screen.

yeah, I did the same thing with my tablet.... it is very viewable, but not too bright... these screens are awsome for viewability, but I haven't played with the smaller ls800.... I really was considering getting one to play with, but I wanted larger... I know what you mean about looking like a piece of laminated plastic... I say it looks like a piece of printed paper but your discription is probably a bit closer to what it looks like...

using it with the pen might not be so bad on a perminent install, or if you want to go nuts you can possibaly have a cover flip down to dock , then the cover flip back up over it... the cover has a glass window in it that covers the screen & it would be a capaciative overlay... that could be a nice setup if you have the space...

Looks unbelievable with the luxeons. Have you seen the "7.7" DXD 10X12"(28163584)" that Boe Hydis lists under "specialized applications"? Any chance your source stocks that one?

I think once you put your typical capacitive touch screen in front you'd destroy all the sunlight readability. I think I could get used having to use a pen. And it would be a far easy fabrication job to fab in a chopped up dock. Plus I kind of think the LS800 would look cool sticking up out of the dash with no housing around the back of it .

I'll try to take some piccies tomorrow to give people an idea of what it would look like. The LS800 may not be cheap but it would solve so many of the Car PC problems that generally plague people.

One thing I haven't yet worked out how you'd do is automatic turn-on or for that matter how you'd do 12->19V DC-DC conversion to charge/power it.

no, I have a good capacitive touchscreen & it has an anti-glare coating.... doesn't hurt sunlight readability much at all... a typical resistive screen would be pretty bad I think... & I guess a pen wouldn't be bad... just keep it teathered... would suck to drop it between the console or under the seat while driving... I did that more than once while testing...

you can use a carnetix p1900 to power it, & start it up/ shut it down & provide power for your usb stuff too...

if the dock has a switch you can hack that easily enough, if not, you may need to open the tablet to get at the switch.. might be a little hairy hacking that apart though, I already disssasembled & reassembled my tablet the first day I got it, some don't like doing this though

I think you have a great idea... I considered the same thing, but I want a bigger screen, plus I wasn't to sure how the ls800 screen compared to the larger screens.. it doesn't have the same ultra wide viewing angles...

I'll ask about the "7.7" DXD 10X12"(2816×3584)" that Boe Hydis lists under "specialized applications"

I haven't seen it... I'll google it later & check it out.... hydis has a few awsome screens that are listed as "under development"... including a real sweet 1280X800 12.1" widescreen that would have been a perfect replacement for my prior screen.... just don't want to wait for what could be 1/2 a year or more

    Coldplate for LEDs

The coldplate that you used to cool the LEDs on your LCD is exactly what I have been looking for. Where did you purchase it at, if you don't mind me asking?

    Thanks
