yeah evandude, I never heard of hackaday until your mention of it cool site & I browsed around a bit, all I did was comment on another guys project who did an edge lit led backlight, another guy linked one that he did too, so I just linked mine to show it too, next day this

must be a pretty popular site, this threads been full of guests all day... I saw 63 guests a bit earlier, & like 42 guests right now... **** I never seen a thread on here with anywhere near that many viewing it at the same time, pretty cool

some guys are slamming it, & some guys are saying what I shoulda done instead, the general thought seems to be it's overkill... yeah, I'd say so too I guess, a liquid cooled screen & a liquid cooled pc... but overkill is not necessarily always a bad thing

this thread is real long & probably not the best way to present a project like this to begin with, theres just way too much to read & a casual skim will not give a lot of the details that went into this,& why I choose the route I did.. back when I started this screen there were no real affordable options for transflective or reflective screens, today this project has to seem a bit unnecessary as there are better & easier ways to do a sunlight readable screen I guess, but it was still a fun project & I'm really happy with the results

I also want to add that, even though I did this mod & I consider it a success, I wouldn't do it this way again if I had to redo it, my new car is getting a fully reflective screen, but I will miss the brightness & being able to use the screen with my sunglasses on during the day in the new car, this screen is no problem even with sunglasses on a really bright day, a few guys mentioned the contrast issues too, well with the first LCD I did, it did get washed out & loose contrast, I wasn't 100% happy with the first lcd, but with the new hydis panel it's perfect... that screen starts with a really high contrast ratio & it's unlike any other LCD in that even with no signal, instead of a bright white screen, this LCD is just black, instead of all the pixels defaulting open they default closed... this allows a really high contrast ratio even with extreme backlighting... this screen is pretty cool in person, & unless you've had to suffer with regular screens in a car it's hard to understand the justification for such extreme measures I guess

    Hey Turbo,

Did you say you were going to try this with a lilliput? Did you ever do it? If not, do you have any thoughts on it?

woh, this threads been burried for a while

I never had a need for a screen that small really for anything I built, I'm sure it could be done, theres no reason it wouldn't work.

the issue with a lilli will also be that since the vga board needs to stay attached, it would need to be hinged back also to 90deg, meaning the overall screen housing would now be pretty deep, the thing would take the size of a whole double din head unit, if this is acceptable for the install then it should be straight forward really, no reason it wouldn't work really

Since I couldn't find a common thread about backlighting (be it with LEDs or otherwise) I am asking this question here.

turbocad6, have you been able to compare a transflective display with your display (in the same conditions)?

And what do you think of this:
    http://manhattanlcd.com/catalog/prod...products_id=41

    Would it work?
    It says at the specs:
    19,000 mcd 6000k Color Temp 1148 LED's Power is 15v @50w
But I don't really know how to judge it.
It's used for building a video projector, so it should be plenty bright.
Would it be possible to dim it?

yea, I've compared side by side with a few different transflective screens, the super bright screen looks better, most times a lot better, it looks lit up when the transflective looks unlit, you can see them both but the bright one looks more vivid & is easier to see & read, transflectives are good enough for the most part though I'd say, considering what it takes for a super bright screen.

that site looks like a hobbiest made it & that nothing there is really available, have you seen anything like this really available? I'm sure it can be dimmable, don't know off hand what would do it though. looks like it should work but will still require diffusion, biggest difference is it can probably be closer to the lcd so less overall thickness.

you've inspired me to go high bright

I made the plunge... A L3 high bright screen (1500) and it's going portrait into my tacoma running from xpe on a t5720.
