I just got twenty 35,000mcd 10mm 80mA LEDs off E-Bay for $35. They are hella bright!

yeah they are but the problem with LEDs is the small viewing angle means you need a lot of diffusion which can drastically cut the light so you need a lot of light. If you put a lot of LEDs in you can possibly cut the diffusion down. The luxeons have a good 110-140 viewing angle but they do get hot!

ok I just did some testing with my current diffusers

this is with a 2 tube backlight in a U shape, actually it's the backlight picture I posted a few posts back

1. I tried the panel on top with nothing but the ccfl's behind, and it was kind of bright

2. then I added 1 sheet of diffuser the brightness increased alot

3. then I added the 2nd sheet and had to rotate it to change the polarization and holy crap I cant even look at it directly

4. I added a smoked sheet of plastic to even out the lines from the diffrent polarizers

i'm trying to take some pics right now, I dont know how they will come out

so you say ti got brighter with the diffusers? how strange.not what i was expecting or had read. mybe it was an increase in the Lumns - i e light coming over a great anlge. hmmm try it with the LCD on and change the number of diffusers.

well this is a broken panel that I have, I havent been able to get my hands on a donor panel that actually works

i'm going to try adding diffrent diffusers from diffrent panels and more of them

yeah it seems to be collecting the light and transmitting it straight out of the panel
