As I understand it the polarizers/diffusers seem to have alot to do with light output from the backlight. Such as Xenarc offering brightness enhancements by changing out the films.

As I think mentioned before in this thread, 3M makes a specific high brightness film that supposedly will increase light output by up to 165% (I'm sure you would losing a wide viewing angle however).

    3M Display enhancement films

Obviously there is trade offs angle vs. light output, etc. I seem to remember someone briefly looking into this in 2001 on these boards.

As mentioned before simply switching to a higher powered inverter with the existing CCFL's will increase your brightness but obviously half the estimated life of the tubes themselves.

A combination of more efficient film, high powered inverter with dimming option and longer or extra tubes should yield a pretty impressive display.

Going by jcdillin comment about the projectors it would appear there wouldn't be a need to replace the polarizers attached to the LCD module itself to compensate for contrast ratio.

Does anyone remember off hand what the current model number is for the Panasonic module in the Xenarc?

Lets recap this if we can. Feel free to correct me if im wrong on anything.

What we have so far >

Heater style wave pattern 2.0mm CCFL backlight on a dimmer
Leaving the stock rectangle CCFL in place
Possibly changing the diffuser/polarizer film with new 3M vikuiti films
Having one lamp shut off or dim when headlights turn on

So if we get all this **** to fit then we will kick ***.

I am also currently looking into an AR material from 3M that wont affect the function of the TS

And i have to give the majority of the credit for this project to Scouse Monkey and Jcdillin. You guys have put a lot of effort into this. Thanks guys

That is pretty much it in a nutshell

does anyone have autocad or something cad like that we can whip up a drawing of this CCFL lamp?

from what they are saying we will have to go with 2 lamps

soon as I get to work I will get the size of the plexiglass light guide.

check this out! they designed this for me, I just need to get the size adjusted to fit behind the plexiglass backing and see if they can do something smaller than 4mm tube, but this is perfect!

ahhh i was right about using two tubes then.

JC, as you arein touch with them would you mind asking them if we can power both tubes off one inverter (dimming). I ahve seen this done so it should be ok.

I will try and get some drawings done in IDEAs this weekend if you still need them.

yes I want to go with 2mm maybe 2.5mm at max, I am currently installing autocad with the hopes I can redo the drawing to bring it down to the area I am going to need to fit perfectly behind the current backlight system.

I hope they can do bends that tight with 2.0mm tubing but I think it might be too small.

I dont see why not, because that backlight I took pictures of is a 2 tube backlight and the inverter I am using to power it is capable of 2 tubes and it was only like $16 from jameco if I remember correctly. But it does not provide dimming support. Which I dont really care about if i'm going to be shutting it down at night and keeping the exsisting backlight

well they are doing 7.2mm radius with 4mm pipes so hopefully 5mm will be possible (or even better)
