Thread: So, give us new LCD touchscreen options!

urghhh! BAD NEWS FOR XENARC OWNERS:

I opened up a Xenarc panel and this is what I found:

The backlighting panel can be removed from the LCD assembly by removing the screws and the small ribbon cable on the side that connects the small LCD PCB to the LCD. You have to leave the bottom ribbo cables attached.

From the LCD side...

Metal perimeter to hold it all in place
1 layer of reflective sheet
2 thick layers of slightly reflective diffusion sheet
1 thin layer of diffusion sheet

then the killer:

the CCFL is a tiny 100mm stick that runs up the side of the screen and is joined to a 4mm thick screen sized piece of plastic with a silver backing material with dimples ont he top surface to break the light out.

How depressing!!

the entire existing backlight would have to be removed. But that means the Xenarc must get 400cd/m2 with a tiny CCFL - mayeb it is down to that reflective 1st layer on the screen.

hmm, unless you could remove the silver backing behind the plexi and just put the new ccfl behind the plexi,

well ive read the thread but my brains melted somewhere along the line, these mods are aimed at lilliput owners mainly now scouse has seen the xenarc setup yeah?

no chance. There is a second, main silver backing and then some plastic support work and the circuit board. Only opetin would be to ripout the plexia nd existing backlight and fit one of the heater element ones and also possibly a preimeter one liek the lillis already have although i suspect it would be easier to just rip it out and fit two slightly larger heater style ones and just use 1 dimmer system.

I don't even know if I will be using this screen or getitng a linITX anyway as the controller is FUBAR (got it on fix or return basis and i don't think it is economical to fix). I have asked chris at LinITX about the internals of their screens as mabe we can upgrade them with the same mod as the lilliputs (hitachi LCD)

well the linitx is for sure an option, maybe the xenarcs would benefit from just having the upgraded 3M diffuser material installed.

ahhhhh I have now completely taken it aprt (will get pics) and the Xenarc has an 'L' shaped CCFL!

the plexi is actually smooth on the top and has a sqaure pattern on the back agianst a white reflective sheet so the light comes out of the back of the plexi, hits the reflective sheet and then goes back through the front.

that is how i woulf have done it I have to say. very efficent.

I willget osme measurments done when i return. have t go check my post in work and pick up a RAeS pack (need to join).

i think the Xenarcs may already have an upgraded diffuser.
I think jsut fit a damn big CCFL back there.

too bad they didnt put the full square ccfl in there, might have made it even brighter

Woot! 3M is shipping me samples of the antiglare film today, so I should receive it next week!
