You want pot controlled PWM on PIC? that can also be done. Read your PM.

the pot control and photocell control is just as easy to do with this one as with he PWM circuit they sent me. The PWN circuit uses 2 chips (one is a 555!!! so nice and simple).

Yeah some of the inverters had built in PWM controllers that just need an voltage between 0 and 5V to be applied.

The others (and some with internal controllers) can be controlled with an external PWM control. We do have a basic circuit but if people want PC control or puch buttons to change the brightness/swithc to auto mode something a bit more complicated will be required.

So i take it you are offering to help?

Hey guys, Just saw this thread and I wanted to chime in with my support. If you come up with a working setup that does not cost a fortune I may just buy one rather than sink $400 into a xenarc

On the issue of controlling the backlight, have you considered using a SMBUS controlled MAX6640 chip or something similar? The chip is designed to sense temperature and automatically modulate the fan voltage (pulse width) to reduce or increase speed accordingly. There is also a version that adjusts voltage directly (not PWM). The beauty of this chip is that is uses a common transistor to measure temperature so... if we replace the transistor with a phototransistor (and prossibly a resistor or two) we will have (1) a way to detect ambient lighting, and (2) the ability to either automatically adjust the backlight or perhaps have a program monitor lighting and adjust the backlight through the SMBUS accordingly. I've already built a temperature sensor circuit and connected it the SMBUS header on my epiaM10 and it works beautifully.

So that's the idea, the bad news is I'm worthless at programming and a complete novice at circuit design.

    Good luck with the project.

This may have been mentioned somewhere in this monster thread but I don't remember seeing it.

fpdisplays will retro fit an lcd to make it day light readable. Apparently all they do is add a one way mirror between the back light and lcd panel and add a contrast enhancing film to the front of the lcd. They change something in the region of $300-$400 for an 8" display if I remember correctly.

This seems a lot simpler (and cheaper?) than sourcing and building a new high power backlight and it will automatically 'adjust' as the brightness changes - including handling partial sun on the screen.

Does anyone know where you can get a one way mirror film or thin sheet?

Ive combed through that site previously. I saw what you were talking about. In the long run the way that scouse and jcdillin are going will be better. I still beleive they need to find an AR film for the front of the panel though. If there design pans out than it will possibly be something that can be mass produced and sold on this site store for far less than 300 to 400.

and maybe a select few research monkeys could get a discount for helping out along the way. HINT HINT...lol

Momanz > So the phototransistor would be sort of like the sensor in many cars that auto turns head lights on and off but backwards? I like the idea. I personally like the idea of the new CCFL lamps turning off completely whenever the head lights are on. But the dimming part is very easily done with the proper inverter hooked to the factory dimmer wire for the head unit. But a phototransistor hooked properly would be a good way for the light to be adjusted on cloudy versus sunny days. Keep up the good work.

Of course we'll have to see what scouse and JC think before i go saying it will work since it is there project.

Have you ever seen an LCD without a backlight? Well, its not readable
