Just get hold a dimmable inverter. That is what we have ordered. And yeah we already have plans for the photcell AND pot dimmer (or maybe push button) design.

I have seen inverters with dimming that can supply up to 8 CCFLs.

The most basic dimming inverters require an external PWM controller. Soem have built in PWM controllers that can be controlled via a simple anologue votltage (5V for max dimming, near 0 (ground) for brightest). These can normally also be controlled by an external PWM control if you wish as sometimes anologue signals are not repeatable with accuracy and may change with an unsteady supply. Some inverters even come with a pot readyt o be turned.

It is best to run all the tubes off a single inverter so you get even brighness and the same response to dimming.

From what I have described I ams ure you see it is easy to have one knob to do an array of inverters but spending money of a multi one would be better.

One more thing, as you noticed we discussed the fact that you need to use 3 colours of LED to tune the colour but with CCFLs you request the colour when they are manufactured. This is the chromatic info I needed fromt he data sheets - labelled as CIE and is in X and y coordinates around 0.3-0.32 generally for LCDs we have found. If you do a google search on CIE chart you will see what we mean,

where have you seen a dimmable power supply that will do 8 ccfl's? also as a side question...do you think that the diffusion layers have a lot to do with viewing angle? the lcd I am using is from a dell 700m laptop....the whole laptop is actually going to be imbedded in this install.....I am turning the screen sideways in my install & will have a 800X1280 screen.....it basicaly is like 2 8" screens over & under...but without the seem.....my problem is viewing angle.....as installed the veiwing angle up & down are fine....but for some reason I can view it fine from the drivers side...but from the passengers view it starts to degrade......as it was in the laptop it was bad if you viewed it from the top..but fine head on or from the bottom....it's not bad enough to discurage my install...but if I could do something in the layers without going to deep into the lcd I would like to try.....any ideas here? thanks...

http://www.ergpower.com/pub/ is the place where we found the best inverters for our needs

I am torn on if the diffusion layers actually affect the viewing angle, I think they dont make a diffrence. because the way the crystals in the LCD are built I think it should change the viewing angle.

you will have a problem with the viewing angle mounting a LCD like that, it's designed to have a better side to side viewing angle than up down.

Tubocad, PM sent with some contacts.

As for the viewing alge yeah i think the LCD is more resposible for the viewing angle.

The only way to impove it would be with a 3M overlay film that could give a wider viewing angle. Have a look on their sight and see what turns up. also try rotating the film you do have through 90deg.

I thought i saw something about 3Ms Vikuiti diffuser/polarizer helping out with veiwing angle. So it may be somewhat related to the diffuser or the fact the Vikuiti materials increase brightness thus increasing viewing angle.

thanks guys...I think I saved myself alot of trouble soldering 150-200 led's only to get less than ideal results...I will use ccfl's in my design...as far as the orientation of my screen....it does look perfect from the drivers seat...& really isn't horrible from the passengers view...although slightly off.....

am I to understand that the heater eliment style design is only good if you plan on purchasing 100 or more? are there any "in stock" sizes that may be to large for a 7"lilli but may work in my aplication? just thought I'd consider that before ordering 8 straight tubes......Thanks again for your sharing......

Try the place I sent you a link for. They will be able to do small quantities of strait tubes for you. If you want a custom shape you are going to have to order 100-200!!!
