I'm finding stuff like this....
" Origin of EEFL
With the prevailing of LCD TV, backlight models of high luminance, efficiency, and long life are in spotlight. While the inverter of traditional CCFL is capable of driving 1 to 2 lamps, the number of demanded inverters reflects high power consumption and heat generation. The inverter of EEFL can drive many EEFL; it contributes to simplify the backlight unit and lower the manufacture cost."
and this
"1.Technology outline of EEFL
The EEFL(External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp) has its electrode outside of the Lamp. It's quite opposite from that of general fluorescent Lamp. The light source of this Lamp is Plasma which is derived by External electrode of electric field inside the Lamp.
Because of this technology, this EEFL does not generate heat itself and enhances the lifetime and the illumination stability incredibly and improves brightness efficiency. This EEFL is absolutely next generation of fluorescent Lamp for lighting."

Where's that picture from? It looks very interesting...Originally Posted by turbocad6

Turbocad, look at the EEFL outputs. The 2.6mm gives out 28k but the CCFL gives out 38K - thats why we stayed with CCFL.
The EEFLs are newer and supposed to last longer nut we would need 40% more for the same brightness which is a problem as we are already cramming a lot in there!
Also the lamp length is not high enough for our design although we could jsut use 3 or 4 and link them together.
The straight bars would have been a more sensible option looking back but hey we got a nice custom design with the corners adding length!![]()
I dont think so, I think it would be harder to fit them into the stock space

Seth mentioned this company to me some time ago when he was considering a similar undertaking. I know there were links to other Luxeon products earlier in this thread so feel free to ignore me if this is just a useless repeat of information.

Cheers Rando, i didnt know they actually had a design. http://www.luxeon.com/pdfs/AB27.PDF
They are using RGB LEDS like we have thought about as you don'y know that white LEDs are correct for your screen so need to use each colour and adjust them. The CCFLs have been deisgned to match the screens and provide the correct colour temp.
Their mirror design is crazy but is more of a low power/high life replacment as they don't really gain much in brightness. what they do get is good control. I have not been throught he specs and design in good detail yet but as you can see the LEDs run at 70degC (85degC junction) which is bloody hot and will require cooling. We have yet to see what cooling we require and we are still looking at using LEDs if i can find the right ones and more importantly the right diffusers. I am also waiting to get my hands on a few reports of recent research into LED backlighting. I would ove to do it if we could due to getting rid of the inverters but i actually expect it to coast at least the same amount and be a lot more work.
