About using LEDs - I wouldn't pay attention to the mcd ratings, but rather to the actual lumens if you can find/calculate them. Many ultra-bright LEDs don't actually put out more light, they just put it in a narrower beam. Since you're going to be using a deffuser anyway, beam width is moot - you want max light output.

Good luck - I'd really like to see someone make this work (even though I've already shelled out for a transflective, and so it wouldn't help me personally.) I'm really curious if this can be made to work practically, and how effectively.
I can get 300cd/m2 transreflective VGA+RCA LCDs with 5 wire touchscreens from a company called Dricoll but they are not cheap (but not terrible considering they are daylight viewable)

How much did you say they were? About $1000? That's probably ballpark.

The route I went with is transflective retro-fitting. I didn't even know it was possible until I found this company in Cali that does it, was a bit leery at first but they came through with impressive results. I think it was about $250 for a 7" screen. That's on top of the screen of course - they say they get best results with NECs, which is what I got, and that set me back about another $500. I've got a rag top though, and I really wanted it to be legible in direct sunlight (and it is! )

To veer back on topic of modding screen brightness:
Most (actually, all I've seen) high-bright LCDs out there use high output CCFLs - usually 4 of them for ~7" screens. That route might be more worthy of investigation than LEDs.

got any pics of you screen? would like o see it working.

I got a quote of around 500 for the 6.4 and 8.4 - need to ask back about the 7". So yeah about $900-1000 but they are mil-spec which is good.

adding more cathodes does seem like a more sensible option - anyone got any decent linkt to suppliers?

No, and it's boxed up while I rework my install (for which I got the display). I've only taken it outside once hooked up to a laptop, maybe I'll do it again to take pics. I'll certainly post pics when I get the whole thing going, but who knows when that'll be

JC, how thick is the diffuser in your lilliput?

I can get 15000MCD LEDS for about 30 cents a piece but I think it would be tough fitting 218 of them back there and at 4+ amps, that would be wicked

the actual diffuser material is about as thick as a sheet of paper and there are 3 sheets of it, plus a sheet of white smoked paper

then you have the piece of plexiglass that is about 1/4" thick

I didnt think of the brightstar LED's though, that might be an option.

this is an interesting site, they have EEFL lamps, and they have the actual layout of the lilliput ccfl tube, maybe stacking 2 on top of each other would help the brightness some

I was thinking something lik the is:

that is one for their CCFL tubes. If we could get a bulk order of those to fit inside 7" screens then we could have it sorted! Persoanlyl i want the brightest possible and don't care itf it blows - i will get a spare!!

The more light int he middle of the screen may mean you can take out some of the diffussers too - but as the screen is brighter you may notice the bright spots if you do.

I am jsut trying to get my panansonic LCD apart - will post pics! I hope it is like your lilliput and just has a perimeter CCFL - that would be easy to boost!

thats what I was thinking, I dont care if it burns out as long as I can change it easy, I can spend $900 getting my screen upgraded for transreflective, but what happens when someone pushes on it too hard and destroys it.

I think I am going to e-mail them to see if that can make a custom size, if they could make them 165 mm wide in a slightly tighter configuration.

dude, i would be up for geting some as well. Will measure up my Xenarc internals tonight. Are you thinkign about keeping the existing CCFL in and putting that inside or just using that? I figure it best to use both then you can turn the inner one off at night controlled by your headlights or dash dimmer lead or something (eg normally relay that connected to your dash dimmer HU lead)
