The route I went with is transflective retro-fitting. I didn't even know it was possible until I found this company in Cali that does it, was a bit leery at first but they came through with impressive results. I think it was about $250 for a 7" screen. That's on top of the screen of course - they say they get best results with NECs, which is what I got, and that set me back about another $500. I've got a rag top though, and I really wanted it to be legible in direct sunlight (and it is! )
To veer back on topic of modding screen brightness:
Most (actually, all I've seen) high-bright LCDs out there use high output CCFLs - usually 4 of them for ~7" screens. That route might be more worthy of investigation than LEDs.
