    Newbie with a question on Non-VGA LCD's

    Hi,

    Well, I'd like to throw a couple of lcd screens in the headrest of my truck. Being somewhat of a n00b on this, I'm not certain which manufacturer has quality screens. I have a Lilliput 7" VGA Touchscreen and the picture quality is excellent. I bought a pair of 7" XO Vision tft lcds for the rear and they look like crap.

    So, before this n00b goes out and buys another pair of lcds can y'all recommend a brand that's picture quality is similar/better than the Lilliput?

    Thanks for the help! (Great forum BTW! )

    P<

    I agree... that's all there is to it. if it's not VGA it WILL look like crap. trust me, i'm living with a non-vga monitor in my dash.

    That's because one is a very different standard based on the digital nature of the comptuer and the other is not. VGA has much, much higher resolution than the video screens. Video screens use the NTSC standard (what regular non high-def TV's use) at around 525 horiz X 400 vert. = 200,000 pixels. Because NTSC is an analog standard and there is not a direct mapping of the signal to each pixel, the LCD controller maps the signal to the screen. Variations in the signal cause pixels nearby to be lit or not. This, plus the low resolution makes the picture fuzzy.

    Even a 640 X 480 VGA screen clocks in at around 320,000 pixels in the same screen area, giving it a higher resolution and there is a much more precise and direct mapping to each pixel on the screen, meaning if it's supposed to be on it is while other pixels nearby stay dark. With 800 X 600, this increases to 480,000 pixels, again in the same screen area (I'm assuming comparison of the same sized screens, here).

    Higher resolution, more precision from VGA. It's worth the cost for the driver's screen. But for the backseat passenger, if you're only showing DVD's, the video screens will do just fine. Just don't try to read text on it.

    Thanks for the replies.

    Looking at the specs of the XOVision LCDs I bought, the resolution for them is 1440x234; the Lilliput touchscreen I have is 800x480. So should I be looking at the vertical resolution more than anything?

    So essentially :

    1440x234 = suX0rs?
    800x480 = VGA = clean picture?

    Are there 7" VGA screens that come without the VGA input? I don't need VGA inputs for where the screens are going to be placed, so I don't want to spend more for something I do not need.

    Thanks

    The cheap lilliput RCa only screens should do you fine. They probbaly have the same panels but without the VGA controller. Just check the specs on any screen you buy and avoind anything like those 1440x234 ones. Look for 'VGA' or 'VGA Quality'.
