how high these will be isn't interesting me, because i will have about 20cm (~4/5") space behind my Xenarc and I got a cheap seller at egay.

maybe the answer is here at the threat, but I haven't found, has anybody tested to spread the light with plexiglas
Also, if you had a look inside the xenarc and had read anything on this htread you would know that the fragile cables between the LCD driver and the panel prevent you from using anthing thicker than the exisiting backlight. The lilliput is better as you can lay the driver PCB down if you do a molded in job but the xenarc also has a side ribbon. True you could get round this if you made an extension cable but that is not in keeping with this whole projects goals.

one thing I can add is that led's right up to the back of the lcd will be a problem with diffusion... that multi-led picture a few posts back looks like crap as far as dispersion & will need so much diffusion that in the end almost all the light will be blocked by the diffusers... it looks realy bright now, but thats because of lack of dispersion through diffusers.... from what I've seen with my led project you will defanatly need to back those led's away from the lcd to help

I originally thought about using many many smaller led's, but the kind that don't heat up aren't bright enough.... you will loose almost 90% of the available light to diffusers to get an even pattern, so you REALLY need to light that sucker up...., unless your willing to accept hot spots scattered, which is what that looks like.....

plexi will do nothing unless you sand it opaque, then it will blurr the hotspots, but also cut the available light down significantly.... from my experience I would say that to use led's you will need depth..... alot more than the original goals of this project will afford........

read it all! go on, i dare you!

this thread is getting huge. regular LEDs are basically a bad idea for large screens (over cell-phone size). Industry has only just started using LEDs because of the new high power ones (>1W) like the luxeons that TC is using. Sony currently have a luxeon screen that does 800nit but is still indirect but shining the leds up into a curved reflector which then shines into a regular LCD liht guide (plexy type material with dimples on the back). This light guide takes light in at the edge and then whent he light hits a dimple on the back surface it changes direction and either comes out of the front straight through the LCD or out of the back and hits the white rear reflector and then passes back through the light guide and out through the LCD.

Doing it this way they get round the problems with bright spots and they can cool the LEDS nicely round the back with finned heatsinks.

that sounds as though you wanted to create a watercooled screen from the outset!

all I wanted from the outset was to be able to see my f@&*in' screen at all times.... I really didn't want to water cool a screen..... it just turned out that way

here's the hold up with the led backlight..... the plumbing has turned into the biggest pain in the ***..... I can't sweat pipe to save my life!!!!! I almost threw this across the shop tonight..... I give up, tommorow I'm going to find a plumber to do this for me......... I've been screwing with this part of the project the longest & everything else has been easy compared to this!!!!!

once the pipework is done I can put this in & finish it....

Nice Job (cough), no really, looks well planned out(plumbing wise), sorry to hear about the sweating prob that your having.

I think that slowly I'm starting to get to that point where not being able to see my screen durring the day unless its an overcast day..is getting to me...
