    hmmm nice site. I have seen some drop in LED modules but i havent seen any bright enough. I have spoken to a few places that initially were confident they could build us an LED solution but when i mentioned 800-1000nit they ran away and never replied to my calls or emails! :S one place said "oh well we couldnt help so we didnt reply" - very professional!

    Where did you get the details of that LEd module from as i could not find it.

    They do some nice looking vga controllers and I will drop them a line about their touch overlays.

    cheers

    I've been reading this thread and keeping up with it quite a bit. Although, here as of late, I've slacked off a bit. I lurk in the shadows on this board mostly. The information is great here -- helps me at work sometimes.

    Anyways... were you aware that companies already manufacture and produce high bright backlight enclosures that you add onto your existing LCD screens? I'm talking anywhere from 1000nit to 2000nit with fully adjustable controllers available that will dim the backlight down to as little as 8 nits?

    For my job, we use a 6.5" Prime View screen in our mobile driver/interface applications. I know that there is a backlight enclosure that you add on to that 6.5" screen. I've seen it first-hand. I believe the costs somewhere in the vicinity of $150.00 plus the adjustable controller. We didn't need a sunlight viewable LCD for the application the 6.5" screen goes into, so we never used it.

    However; I know landmarktek also manufactures similar products for 8.5" and 10.4" screens, We tested a sample for the 8.5" screen over a year ago. this might be the easiest route? These were not very expensive either. You simply eliminate the existing backlight on your existing LCD, and place the LCD directly over the landmark backlight. Their brackets only supported certain LCD's but if you could fab up your own (Like we did) then you wouldn’t have any problems.

    As for a couple good company to deal with? I recommend the following;

    Distorted axis,

    yeah we had seen some addon modules but the problem is the same we have with finding better touch screen - we are dealing with an annoying size and aspect ratio. Most screens are 6.5, 8, 10.4 in 4:3 and the few manufacturers who do 7" widescreen aspect screens do so in 16:9 where as ours are not quite this size and products for these are even scarcer than the screens themselves. An example is if you try getting a data sheet for a 6.5" LCD and then try getting the data sheet for a sharp 7" true 16:9 and then try getting one for the hitachi and panasonic lcds in our displays - damn near impossible!

    The other big problem we have is the way that the small driver boards are mounted to out screens - especially the panasonic in the xeanrc. This has a ribbon cable mounted other the side as well as along the bottom of the panel. This means we cannot go any deeper than the existing backlight and a lot of the daylight screens we have seen have has substantial thinckenss increases.

    Finally with regard to buying one...at $150 + dimming circuitry - not bad i guess after all my previous quotes of $400+. But I assme this is if they dont have to design us a non standard unit and if they do Jerry and I and all the donations would not go towards meeting the cost of a minimum order and Jerry and I cannot outlay the kind of cash required or take orders for money when we have no idea if it will work how we want it. Also say it costs about $150 + controller + shipping and taxes and we are looking at $180 minimum. Well even with these new USA made inverters we are confident we can get it for half this amount. Initial estimates were about $60. This has crept up a bit now but that was all part of the learning experience.

    I will check out the links later after I have done some work on me new LCD project.

    cheers

    I just had a thought that we could possibly get a U shaped tube for the 8" LCD panel. Punisher, despite that last outburst from you you have PM.

    hmmm,

    punisher, I just spoke to Armen from digitalww on your behalf and he said he did infact recieve an email off someone who needed a new panel and he replied with a price but he never heard back. i understand that if it is you then you need a 640x480 resolution panel which is now the old model and a lot of second hand damaged screens we see are the 800x600 models. I probably don't have to say this but you need to get he 640x480 if that is what you already have or the controller will need replacing too.

    So if it wasnt you then Armen certainly can help you. If it is you then you must have missed his reply.
