IS an "auto dimming circuit" okay with you because they are already planning on that.

Now that would be golden. Maybe a good project for my senior design if your tubes stay cool

right now it's working without any added width or depth on the LCD only thing extra is 2 wires coming out of the side as you can see from the pictures

....no...i will refrain and keep my mouth shut....

The depth is the same as we have designed the tubes to fit int he exisitng space. As JCD says there is just 4 wires coming out but there is also likely to be a slightly larger inverter than standard (we use 2 at the moment but hope to get that down to 1) and a small dimming circuit. The inverter wires are long so locating the inverter should be easy. But we might shortent he wires.

I have a question.....how can you work together, being on the 2 opposite sides of the globe?

There is definitely room in the base for the inverter. Well, I would assume there is. A little nibble of the back or side with a small fan, could be optimal. If not, it can be mounted elsewhere, and wires run.

As for hear buildup, I can't see it being more of an issue then with the other screens. In fact, because the screen, when on, sits in free space, convection cooling should be optimal.

Well, I was thinking more about you sending me the unit to test fit. Of course, if it worked, I would pay, if not, then back to you it goes.

just so your head doesn't explode trying to keep it in, I did read the phototransistor part in the first post. Didn't say anything about a pot for fine tuning tho thought I'd put in my $0.02, just kinda thinking aloud. might give u guys ideas. I say putting the sensor right near the LCD, like in the frame and being able to adjust the pot to the proper brightness when it is light and maybe set a floor and ceiling for the luminence. Nothing is ever perfect. sorry if I'm out of line and this is all stupid stuff u already thought of.

and as far as the depth, there is some room in the case, there ISN'T room in my dash...trust me, I had to dremel and bondo glass 3 times b4 I could get it out far enuf...there's no plastic left. Hopefully that final inverter doesn't take up more depth or I might not be able to be one of the lucky ones to use it. can't even relocate it unless the wires are like over 1ft. could put my own on I guess...

We have been planning the autodimming from day 1 so I will clarify for the everyone, Jerry can you add this to the 1st post?, the autodimming design will have the following (these are things we always intened to build in):

    1. Photocell mounted aound the screen bezel (will recomend people look at their dash in sunlight and mount it in the spot where most light falls on the screen).

    2. Manual pot to turn up/down the autodimmed levels - ie the screen will still auto adjust but if it's not quite right you can alter it.

    3. manual mode to prevent any auto adjsuting

4.-OPTIONAL-PC control so the frontend can increase the brightness for some apps or you can build a nice OSD fo control the autodimming if you dont want to have buttons.

    5. The manual adjustment might be done with 3 buttons. ie one for up, one for down and one to toggle auto on or off. This might be tricky as it will need either a batteyr backup or some kind of non-volatile memory (i have never built anything like that)

As for the inverter, I do not recomnd you lengthen the wires. They are taking 1000V and have to be silicon insulated. They are also a hige source of noise. YOu should be able to stuff the inverter below/above/to the side of the screen area or mount it perpendicular to the screen along side something. Jsut make sure it doesnt touch anything. Jerry is having a lot of fun burning his fingers, poor lad

that will be easy as the PIC microcontroller has a small area of memory that can store simple things. such as the previous on/off state and brightness level, and it's NVRAM so it will store it even without power. And even still if that wont work it's very very easy to add a small eeprom that will hold it all without power.

Will you be offering the auto dimming circuit seperate from the entire kit? I would be very interested in purchasing one or two of these and I know several other people that would be too.

The screen will be dimmed by controlling the amount of voltage to the backlight, correct?

I know you've already heard this a million times, but great job on the project. It's quite an undertaking and you're really moving quickly on it!

Yes the auto dimming will be a add-on. So you wont need to purchase it if you want to do something yourself.

    Correct.

Thank you, even if people do say it a million times, makes it all worth while
