It's basically a temperature sensor (1 on chip and 4 remote sensors) that plugs right into the smbus header on your motherboard. You can monitor/record temps using motherboard monitor 5 or speedfan. It would be good to know exactly how hot this thing gets in your dash.

let me know if you think it would be useful.

oh, and did I mention that the is soooo coooool

yes it would be very useful, but as I dont have any motherboards with a i2c or smbus header I wouldnt be able to use it. I think i'm going to just hook one of my ds18s20 temp sensors up with a pic and monitor it with a small charcter LCD

but thank you very much for the offer

    EDIT:
actually what temp sensor is that using? because I have been having some troubles with my ds18s20's your board might be more accurate, and I can do i2c with my pic. If you want to make one i'd be happy to give it a try

It looks sweet to me but can you describe how it looks in person? Does it look washed out at all, contrast issues, etc? Are you going to have to replace the diffuser?

    uhm, looks really bright

but really it looks very good, it's not washed out that I can tell at all.

I am not sure about the diffusers, I do have a little bit of uneven light, but I think that is coming from the crappy inverters from china

Is this distortion from the jpeg compression/camera issues or is that actually on the screen?

Details on construction and specs are here. I dug up the first one I built, it's ugly (forgot to reverse the pattern) but worked when I first built it. I'll test it out and PM you if it works. the chip I used was the MAX1989.

I was just curious if this adds any depth to the LCD at all or if it's exactly the same width as the original backlight. My LCD is installed without the back casing in my dash and has basically no space to expand. Also, it'd be really cool if someone could rig up a light sensor and mount it to the LCD w/ a DAC or something to control the voltage on the backlight. then you could have a pot tweak to make sure it's the proper brightness adjustment. Now that would be golden. Maybe a good project for my senior design if your tubes stay cool
