is it not enough to use the 'faux' dimming most front ends can do?

b/c part of this project was to have a controllable light source. As far as the "faux" dimming done by controlling the gamma is just not as good as adjusting the light source...hence the importance of the ability to dimm the light...

well said Jerry. Just heard back form China (again) and they want to know how many tubes we need to power and so I just went with 10 (yes guys - 10 tubes - ) for now and they dont have sockets so we will probably have to solder the tubes in but this should save room. Not sure if we should put the wires outside or inside. The Xenarc doesnt really have room for the ends protruding and I don't really want the tubes touching the metal frame.

Yeah but there is not enough room for the ends inside, the electrodes are going to cause some major dark spots, we wont have a choice but to bring them outside the case, how long did you say the entire electrode is?

Haven't read all posts, but would it be that difficult to create something ourselves? Seems like the most difficult part would be finding the transformator...no?

not stupid at all - i thought about it but am crap with electronics! We could just use a van der graaf generator

That TDK inverter above is very simple. Hopefully our new direction will have some better results in terms of inverter availability.

All you'd need is a vibrator (a variable one if you want dimming) and a cap for semi sinus-waves and a transformer to get the high voltage.

I think I'm over-simplifying, but that should be the essence, no?
