Question Newbie Q: LCD+DVD in my car

Hi everyone, my name is Chris Collier and I am new to your forum.......

From some of the reading that I have been doing in here, you guys really know your stuff

    I hope that I can get a laymen's definition/instructions to my question.

I want to put an LCD monitor in my car and be able to play DVDs, and have the sound come through my stock speakers??? Is this possible?

I do not mind outsourcing component parts and fabricating mounts in order to save money.

I just want something simple, and effective...for now

Just the ability to play DVDs on an LCD monitor.

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

Is it going to be cheaper and easier to go with some sort of onboard PC based system with a DVD drive?

Or buy an LCD, install it, and then buy a DVD only player and install it????

Really look forward to learning more, and maybe someday I will be able to help others in here!!!!

    Thanks,

    chris collier

It's entirely possible for you to have sound through your speakers. All you would have to do is have a head unit (CD/tape player), that has a line input.

If you want to find information easily, I would reccomend using the search. It's in the upper left corner, in all of those little option listings over there.

Well, this you probably wont find using the search:

If ALL you EVER want to do is play DVDs, a standalone DVD player will be your cheapest bet, with an NTSC LCD. They are still in the $600+ range for the DVD player and $200-500 for an LCD. A small PC with a 1GHz processor, DVD, 128MB ram, and 10GB HDD pre-built will cost $680, without LCD, keyboard, mouse, or software.

You will find more info than this if you search, however--extensive info:
Your head-unit will have to have AUX or CD-IN jacks, or you can use an FM Modulator or a cassette tape adapter.

The only worry I would have about the stand alone DVD player would be durability. They are entirely designed to sit on a shelf and be used stationary. However, IMO I would assue that computer DVD players would be built a little more durable because people would be moving ocmputers around more, and they would sit a weird angles while people were working on them (turned off of course, or at least with an empty drive.)

I haven't heard of anyone who has put a home DVD player in a car.

Home theater DVD players work. Before indash DVDs came out...they were a hot install. THey are definitely not the most reliable especially since you can pick up an Audiovox DVD player "made" for cars at Best buy for like 400 bucks. Never the less, home theater dvd players do the trick, but will skip and damage DVDs if you hit a bunch of bumps.
If you've got the cash....Pioneer 7300 DVD/LCD in one. Cant beat the quality in my book.
