Arrow Powertip 40X4 LCD? Please Read!

I have been trying to interface a Powertip 40X4 (model 4004A i think) LCD to my PC. I have interfaced many 20X4 HDD44780 Displays with no problem but this is presenting a problem. I am positive that the wirirng is correct but for some reason i can't get it to display anything. Can someone please help!
I am trying to run two LCD displays from two seperate lpt ports. (I have tried running only the 40X4 at the one time on both ports but still to no avail)

    1. Have you tried to run the display alone on the computer ?
    2. The wiring of a 4x40 is different than a 4x20, because the 4x40 has 2 controller chips oposite to the 4x20 which only has 1, therefor the wiring is different than a 4x20
    3. I got a 4x40 from EIO it also has 16 'data' pins.. Pins 17 & 18 on our display is only to provide the backlight with power. So the question rises, is your display backlit ??? if not, that's the reason why you don't have these pins on the display.
    4. you say you want to run 2 displays off the paralel port. Are these displays identical or do you want to use the 4x20 and the 4x40 simultaneously ? If that's the case I don't think this would work.

Check your wiring, and make sure you have got the right wiring-schematic.

    Good luck !

I have attempted running the display by itself on the PC but to no avail.
I understand that the wiring is different and i have followed the schematic that is mentioned in Jarrod Bells discussion before this one (one for a seiko display (the version with the 2nd Enable pin. ie not the 20X4 version).
No my screen is not backlit and that would be the reson for the 16 pins.
To run the two displays i am using two Seperate paralell ports. Is this possible to run two different displays then?

I am unsure of the chipset though. There is six chips on the back. They have 'SEC' written on each of them and some other number which i can't remember off hand. I have been told by the supplier that this "should" work the same as the HD44780 chip. Is this correct?

    Please Help.

From what I've been told SEC is an epson chip. You might what to search the chip number on google.

Should these work just like the HD44780 chips?? ie with the same software?

I have found out that the chips are as follows.

    The display contains 6 Chips:
    2 x SEC KS0066 C750B
    4 x SEC KS0063B 0617

Does anyone know if this is compatible with the HD44780 displays. I have wired the pins correctly but i only receive two rows of black squares (1st and 3rd rows).

I have searched this forum and found a large article on this problem but i have tried all those theory's and none of them work?
    anyone else?

This is what the display is supposed to do when it get's powered. It initializes on startup.. showing 1st and 3rd lines black squares.. After you see this, the display is waiting for data to display.

have you tried to run lcdprint.exe from dos ? (you can find this program on the net)
Is your parallelport-setting ok ? (EPP)
Is the address of your parallelport ok ?

you might want to try it on a computer with only 1 parallel port..

If you write your own software for this you might be able to, but since all available plugins use only 1 (the original) I don't think this is possible.

    Good Luck !

Sorry raas youre wrong it is posible to run 2 lcd on 2 diferend poorts.
    I have a 4x20 and a 4x40 running at home to test.
I use 2 diferend programs. 1 is a plugin for winamp and the other one is called lcdinf from a dutch guy and gives some info on the computer like cpu load, memory , swap files and time.

So it is posible to have two lcd runnin' at the same time, butt you have to use two differend programs or run a program twice(not sure if this works).
