Ive ordered an external inverter board just to see if its that portion thats frying in these things. Im determined to either fix it or finish it off lol. So I plan to bypass the onboard inverter and transformer and try powering the screen off the external.

Has anyone been successful in getting this thing working in Vista? Every time I plug in the USB connector for the touchscreen, I get a "USB Device Not Recognized" and have yet to find drivers that will install (including the vista ones supplied here: http://www.eeti.com.tw/web20/eg/drivers.htm#vista )

I used one of these for about a week in my room hooked to the 12v rail from a molex. It worked beautifully... No problems and I used it constantly.

I put it in my saab, on the 12v rail for the cigarette lighter. It started acting weird. I've had almost every symptom listed here.

-Screen folds forward one notch and then tries to retract. Sometimes it repeats this after power is cut and re-applied, but it usually corrected itself by the 2nd power cut.
-Screen folds down but does not retract, even though gears are heard turning. Sometimes cut and re- on the power plug fixed it, somtimes it needed to be pushed in manually first.
(The problem below happened ~10 minutes after an engine crank to 5000 rpms)
-Now, my major problem is the screen goes black after 45-75 seconds of being on. I thought it was heat but I can't find a way to make it crash manually. After this the touchscreen still works (I could hear changing of songs when I touch the screen) but it will not retract or fold after that.
-About 40% of the time when the above happens, the screen turns white after about 10 seconds, and then it will fold and retract fine. After retracting and re-opening, screen runs for another minute or so and repeats...

    Overall:
    -Love the build quality
    -Screen is pretty damn bright
    -Cheap! Fast shipping!
    -NEEDS REGULATED DC POWER.

I believe unregulated automotive current will fry the monitor's circuitry. It still works... sorta... but it's never the same. Even putting it back on the PSU's 12v rail inside my house, it malfunctions every time.

I'm going to try a warranty claim.

So what would be the best way to solve this problem? I don't want to wire this thing to my car until I can give it a clean power source. If I were to swing by RadioShack, what would i need?

I would say get a molex splitter/plug to pull power from your carpc, some 14 gauge copper wire, and some wire splicing materials. Pull the 12v power from your carPC; that will always be clean.

As for the Vista drivers issue... I have no idea.

So I bought my screen from "tradesolution07" on ebay. I shot them an email about my problem and they've been very talkative and quick in their replies. Since yesterday this is the conversation...

    ME:
    "Hello,

I recently purchased the item "T0701A 7" In-Dash TFT-LCD Touchscreen VGA Monitor" from you through ebay. The item number was 280102315070 and it was paid for with paypal, transaction ID 7EL246165B0777809.

The monitor was correctly hooked to a constant 12v power supply and was grounded properly. The monitor opens and turns on, however the LCD screen turns black after 35-95 seconds. After this, the power source must be removed and then re-installed for the monitor to function again. There was also a "dead pixel" (dot that does not change colors with the rest of the screen) when I received the monitor. Because the unit is not usable for more than 30 seconds, I would like to arrange a return and receive a replacement unit. Please let me know if this would be possible. I talked to several other people who purchased this monitor and some of them had the same problem, and the manufacturer replaced or repaired the unit for them.

    Thank you,
    James"

    TS:
"ok i will email this to my engieer see what the probelm is"

    ...2 minutes later...

    TS:
    "hi

you have to connect the green cable to the ground. pls ask someone who know to fix it for you"

and then again, before I could even respond...

    TS:
"the green cable is the signal line , have to connect it to the ground"

and then I lied a little bit to try and get a new unit (to hook it to a PSU)

    ME:
"The Black and Green wires were both connected to ground, and the Yellow and Red were both connected to 12v. The fuse is fine and all other devices I have used on the same 12v are fine. I used a voltimeter to test the voltage on the 12v rail and it never went higher than 12.5v on the highest charge, and it stayed over 11.9v at the lowest. I cannot think of any reasons for the unit to fail."

they sent this back this morning...

    TS:
Hi,here i have to know more about the problem.

1.At first,he has connected the green and black cable to the ground.
Otherwise, the screen will not be opened.
So i want to know, when the screen is open,it shows blue screen, right?
And if put video in,is there any pictures show?
If he choose VGA state, then the screen will show black screen untio there
is a computer connected. But if just keep the video state, the screen should
keep showing well.If turns black a few seconds later, there will be some problem"

Looks like I finally got some one who takes the time to make at least semi-proper engrish sentences! lol... anyway. So it sounds like the VGA input dies after a minute or so but the component video in will work? I'm going to re-wire this thing to my PSU and see if it will maintain a video signal from my xbox... if so, I think my video card will output through s-video and then I have an adapter...

Does anyone know if this will kill video quality? I've never used s-video from a computer.

Alright, I couldn't get it to change to AV1 or AV2, so I reached for the remote and I realized I left it at my friend's house. Right now, I don't know if the AV1 hook-ups work or not. I really want the VGA to work... it's so crisp. I sent this back today.

"The black and green wires are both already connected to ground. The screen opens and folds alright. When the monitor is on the VGA state, it works correctly for a minute or two before going black, and then turning white a few seconds later. Disconnecting the VGA and reconnecting does not fix the problem. Closing the Screen and opening it fixes the problem. After it is fixed it turns black again and then white, and there is no picture. I have not been able to test the AV1/Video state yet, but I don't need it. I am using the monitor for a computer which only has the VGA connector. I think the unit is repairable if I could send it to you. Please let me know what you can do, I love your products."

I'll probably get a reply while I'm at work tonight. I'll keep this thread updated.

    *UPDATE*

    TS:
"ok let me know when you get the remote"

    ME:
"I received the remote today but the monitor will not switch to AV1 or AV2 to test the video state. The remote still changes volume, angle, menu, eject, and everything else though so I know the remote is not the problem."

This monitor is horrible. I have the same problem as everyone else, it seems. The screen turns on, then goes blank. This is definitely a voltage issue...The range on this screen is not automotive range for voltage. I would not buy it again, I think I'm gonna go with Zenarc or Lilliput.

Right now I'm still running things off my laptop until I've got everything I need for a more permanent solution.

What about picking one of these up and putting it between the display power input and the car:

So you're installing a PC capable of running Vista in the car? You better put it under the seat and then you can say it doubles as a heated seat..

Thats interesting Wilco, I had the same idea..Are those voltage regulators the correct part for the job, though? Are they sufficient to ensure clean 12V all the time, and no more? If so, then I think its a good solution...Does anyone know if this is the correct part for this type of application??
