BlueVisor, where did you order your kit from? $70 isn't too bad. Can I get it here in US?
I assume you live in the US... you know on the other side of the Earth, where I live, it also costs a few hundred... Chinese Yuan...Originally Posted by khan1369

I actually bought my LCD kit (panel+controller card) for 570 Yuan shipped. (70 USD)

Here is a thought.. All the chips needed for the controller card are inbedded in a laptop motherboard right? Why can't a a new board be manufactured from the stuff on the motherboard? Also, I have heard that there are some laptops that have removeable video cards but they are an entirely different bus system so you can just mount it to an ATX motherboard. Can't some sort of adapter be made? And anyone know of a laptop with a removeable video card?
And what about the single chip lcd controllers? What can be done with those?

LCDs can certainly be hacked. I've seen an LCD hack that drove the panel directly from a analogue VGA port (plus perhaps a few discrete components, I don't quite remember). The system was put into a very perticular bit depth and refresh rate, and the guy only got like 6 bit color, but it did work. I don't know if it's possible to do something like that for any, or even many, LCDs, but hey.Originally Posted by khan1369
Disk drives are kind of expensive. Why don't you see if you can magnetize something like a Beyblade and assemble the controller chips and components from stock. It ought to save you a lot of money vs. buying a microdrive.

This will tell you roughly what is needed to build one >>>

The controller is a Genesis GMZAN1, if you can atleast find the datasheet for that with a basic reference design then you are already 1 step out of a 1000 needed.

I had an old Toshiba Satellite 410 I think was the model number. There was a removeable daughter board which was the video card. I've heard of people making PCI cards based on these cards, which have a CHiPS and Technologies microcontroller on board. Not sure what would be involved in making one of these into PCI, but I'm sure it could be done by the hobbiest with a little R&D.

Thanks bravada, that was the kind of post I was looking for. I will look into it.
But guess what? I always wanted to design, build my own jet engine at home, using hacksaw, a drill and a used spray can. But then I was only 9 yo thenOriginally Posted by turbocad6
It is probably possible to build one for under $100 only if the design is already laid out, you have access to PCB, chip programmers, SMD workstation and test equipments.
Getting hold of the parts can be a problem already, some can only be bought in 1,000pcs.
Designing it yourself with no knowledge what so ever? and without access to equipments? hmm no I dont think it ever materialise. Better off finding something to mod.
Anyone trying a motherboard for under $50 then?
