Arby - I don't get it. Can you please explain in a little more detail. Why would redoing the polarizing on the back help? Redoing, how exactly? And why would it be more difficult than the front?
AFAIK, a normal LCD has its polarizers at right angles to each other. When you invert it, they become parallel. So I don't understand what you mean by "redoing the back".
The reason I said the back one is harder is that you have to be careful to not break off the conductive strips. They aren't on there that great.
Here's a picture of a LCD I did that way, and the contrast is fine in the daylight :)
Arby, I noticed on your diagram that you stated that the rear piece of porazing film had to be vertically polarized, but not quite, because lcd twists the polarization slightly. Does it matter which way to rotate the film? And if it does matter, how do you figure out which way to rotate it without putting the display back together with a piece of film in the back?
Before you cut it, slide a small piece in there, and rotate it until you get the best contrast. Then cut the full piece in the same direction.
I was actually just hoping there was a way to figure it out without putting the LCD back together.
I gave that a shot and just couldn't get it to look as nice as yours, Arby...
All a piece behind the lcd did was make it dimmer. I tried two pieces in front of the lcd and, after much turning, could get the background black, but the text was almost unreadable...
What's your secret?

You guys aren't using MO displays, I'll bet.
Your displays have some degree of refleciveness to the backing (transflector). This allows light to pass through the display and back out again. The polarizer behind the lcd would be effective.
My MO display must not have a reflective surface (transmissive), all light you see from the display is provided by the backlight... This probably renders a rear polarizer ineffective.
I don't know. What do you think?
